Isn't it hypocritical of Mullen ...

to demand of his recruits that they cut off all other visits and offers but to flirt with coaching vacancies every offseason? It's understandable, yes. But it's hypocritical. And that's the only part of any of this that pisses me off.<div class="ugdv_contextMenu" id="ugdv_myMenu" style="display: none; "><ul id="ugdv_contextMenu">[*]Open in Google Docs Viewer[*]Open link in new tab[*]Open link in new window[*]Open link in new incognito window[*][*]Download file[*]Copy link address[*]Edit PDF File on PDFescape.com
</div><div id="ugdv_jqContextMenu"></div><div></div>

They are being recruited to the university, not to him. He doesn't take his players with him if he leaves.

He asks them to shut down their recruiting, skip camps, lobby for the program, etc. From what I gather (maybe I'm wrong on this) he does so above and beyond what a lot of coaches ask of their commitments. But he won't shut down his own recruitment to other jobs every offseason. Just rubs me the wrong way.

do you honestly believe that they truly are obligated to listen to such a request? No... They aren't, and neither is he.

And I guess it just sounds like I'm being pious or something, but if you're going to be known for expecting your players to shut down their recruiting, it's hypocritical for you to enter constant flirtation for other jobs.<div>
</div><div>By all means, he can do what he wants how he wants, when he wants, etc. But it makes the recruiting rhetoric even more of a crock than it already was and it cheapens his whole message of building up the program, doing something special for the people of this state, etc. Just saying I don't care for it.</div><div><div class="ugdv_contextMenu" id="ugdv_myMenu" style="display: none; "><ul id="ugdv_contextMenu">[*]Open in Google Docs Viewer[*]Open link in new tab[*]Open link in new window[*]Open link in new incognito window[*][*]Download file[*]Copy link address[*]Edit PDF File on PDFescape.com
</div><div id="ugdv_jqContextMenu"></div><div></div><div>

it's the nature of the business...and it's a job he has always wanted<div>
</div><div>How can you be mad about that?</div>

As long as he hasn't taken an offer, then there's nodefinitiveproof that he really did flirt with other programs or not. Not saying he did... Not saying he didn't. The only thing I know for a fact is that he's been here for 3 years now and has brought this program up to where our heads are finally above water at least. As long as he's working hard while he's here, I don't even mind the possibility that he may indeed have looked at other opportunities especially with how fickle the coaching occupation is.<div>
</div><div>I'd be more pissed if he was telling those recruits that and he had our program in shambles, but since we're much better off than what we have been before, I don't feel as bad at the prospect of another coach coming in and keeping the ball rolling and possibly doing better.</div>

A better analog to the players keeping their recruitment open after committing would be for a coach to accept a position and then continue interviewing for jobs at other schools. Once the coach or player arrives and completes a season, they have fulfilled that original commitment. After that, everything is fluid.
