And unfortunately or not, perception matters in the college sports business.
I disagree in that I believe he should be fired if perception didn't matter. You consistently don't meet achievable goals in any business, you should be fired.
If the goal was set tourney or bust, then i'm good with it. I wouldn't have set that goal. My goal would have been something along the lines of a certain overall record and SEC record and tourney appearance. I can live with losing in the first round to a better team or to a hot team (Xavier, Duke, Texas). I can't live with losing to inferior opponents or having to play better teams b/c our regular season was a **** show.
For instance, we go 12 and 4 or 11 and 5 SEC and 25 and 6 or 24 and 7 overall we are in pretty good shape seeding wise. Not asking too much either. Very achievable. Now with decent seeding we play an inferior opponent. If they get hot, play lights out and beat us, I can live with that.
2nd Scenario. We go 8 and 8 SEC and 21 and 10 overall, squeak in and get a crappy seed, then lose to a better team in the first round. I'm not o.k. with that. If you don't screw around with the average to worse teams, you don't put yourself in that situation.
