I have no idea of the veracity of the numbers cited, but anecdotaly, they seem in line with what I hear.

Some of those numbers are frighteningly low.

If they can get a job it'll be at a severly depressed rate. I've seen a study they new graduates end up starting at rates so low that they are 10 years behind graduates who got jobs in 2007 (just before the recession). The study then projected out their entire incomes over their careers and figured out that they will never catch up in wealth to the graduates from just a few years earlier.

(barring outside factors or career changes etc... either way that's pretty scary stuff especially with the spiraling cost of education)

That being said, the vast majority of employment stats you see in regards to law school are bull ****. That website is called law school transparency, so maybe they did further research. But typically, the lower the tier the school is, the more likely that there numbers are complete ****. However, almost every school does it to some degree (as in "employed" may mean flipping burgers at BK). So maybe both are fudging a bit, and MC really is that much better. Some schools, such as the university of michigan, have released a detailed and accurate account of where each of their students is employed or not employed.<div>
</div><div>I will add that I have heard that it is sometimes easier for MC grads to find jobs in the Jackson legal market because of their proximity to it, though I don't know the veracity of that statement either.</div><div>

And if you are in the top 10% of your class (that might be 5% now), you'll be fine. The problem is everyone thinks they can be top 10% heading in. Almost everyone at law school is damn smart, or absent that, REALLY damned good at taking tests.

another tactic law schools like to use is to hire recent grads to do part time work assisting with research oradmissionsor whatever within the law school. now they can claim these students have "jobs" at the 6 month/9 month/1 year mark.

You only go to MC if you can't get in anywhere else or if you have a spouse or some other tie that keeps you from leaving the Jackson area for school. MC does do better with the resources it has than Ole Miss does, but it's still easier to get a good job out of Ole Miss than MC, and MC would have to be much better to justify the extra expense, assuming you're paying full tuition.

The reality is the majority of students going to MC Law (and a sizeable portion of UMN Law stuidents if not a majority) are making a mistake from a financial perspective. Unless you're getting close to a full ride or have enough money that the financial aspect of it doesn't matter, you probably shouldn't go to law school right now (unless you have a completely worthless college degree, and going to law school sounds better to you than getting a marketable undergrad degree).

Your assumption that it is easier to get a job out of OM than MC is a direct contradiction to the OP's facts. Since I took the original statement loosely as fact and tie that to the absolute fact that OM is a lot less expensive, I found the correlation interesting and meaningful.

Supply and demand comes into play here just like it does nearly everywhere.

Than a MCLaw degree. Its all about where you can find clerkships and summer work that will lead to a job in either case. Population wise, there are obviously more opportunities in Jackson. I think that equals out what little "good old boy" UMLaw hires there are. Firms don't hire based on where your diploma came from anymore. Of course, firms aren't really hiring much anyway. In either case, it comes down to the individuals. Then again, what would I know...

I'm glad I graduated in an era where it was easier to find work and going forward our young people need to consider careers that can get them employed, even if it isn't their dream job. Baby boomers will be transferring a lot of their wealth to the health care sector over the next two decades.

And the numbers may have something to do with UM having more students going straight to law school after college versus MC, which seems to focus on getting more students "going back" to law school. Those with real world experience probably have a better grasp on what it takes to he a job on the back end of law school. But I doubt the real numbers are as far apart as those cited.

Mississippi College costs around twice as much as Ole Miss. Both of these schools are a bad idea without rich parents to bail you out if you fail to get a job or a full scholarship, and in the case of the latter it's still probably a bad idea. I just graduated from UM and fortunately have a great job but that would be largely due to my GPA/Rank and the clerkships I had. UM's real advantage or "pro" over MC is the price tag, after that I feel like qualified job candidates from both schools get a fair shake. That said, those with mediocre grades/poor rank and lack of clerkships, no law journal, etc. don't have much of a chance (at least in the private defense firm world anyway) from either school.<div>
</div><div>If you want to practice in MS, then you have some real advantages going to school in MS. If you don't, then going to a MS law school is incredibly stupid (for most, not all- some folks have really done well out of state).</div><div>

I didn't/don't think it's ethical for them to include my employment and salary to skew the current condition of the market. New law school classes should be taken down from 150 to around 100. yeah, i've said for years since i graduated from law school back in 2007 (didn't go to OM or MC)that something needs to be done to regulate the number of law students out there. it does no one any good to flood the market every year with mediocre students who now have $100+K in debt. about 100 law schools should just cease to exist. and the schools remaining shouldn't have more than 150 or so students per class. my law school had a total of around 500 students. but i work with people who went to miami and other law schools that had nearly 500 students PER CLASS.

i know people should make their own decisions and live with the consequences and all that, but regulating the size, quality, and quantityof law schools out there isn't preventing one from going to law school, merely limiting their ability to get accepted. med schools are far more limited and many students spend several years taking the studying for and repeatedly taking the MCAT and applying for med school while shadowing doctors and trying to work their way into getting accepted. this isn't a bad thing. every college senior who makes a 147 on his LSAT shouldn't be guaranteed a tier 4 law school spot. he should go work and study his *** off and get that LSAT up closer to 160 beforehe is even really considered for a much more exclusive spot at arespectable law school. if the student doesn't have the drive to get their score up for the next round of applications, then it's probably best they don't go into law school.

If graduating from law school wasn't generally required to sit for the bar exam, you'd start seeing tuition at all but the best law schools drop.

There is an argument for artificially limiting the number of doctors, but there's no reason to limit the number of lawyers. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to do a lot of legal work and people need access to affordable legal services. Allowing more people to become lawyers would give it to them.

And notice I said good job, so it doesn't even contradict the linked article (not that you should ever trust employment results provided by law schools).

It mostly comes down to the individual, so going to MC instead of Ole Miss is not going to make the difference between getting a job or not getting a job in most situations, but generally it's going to be a little harder to get an interview for selective jobs coming out of MC than UM. If people want to see top 15% from UM, they'll want to see top 10% from MC. And UM at least gives you a shot at on campus interviews for Memphis and Birmingham firms, so you're not completely dependent on the Jackson market.

There may be a lot of jobs in Jackson for state agencies or smaller firms where being in Jackson year long helps finding a job, but if you don't have somebody else pay for law school (especially at MC), a lot of those jobs aren't going to let you get rid of your student loan debt in less than 30 years.

let's try not to compare an undergraduate degree to a graduate/professional level degree. an undergraduate degree gives you a chance to be a contributing member of society and gain a somewhat broad general education while still focusing in an area and opens the doors to all kinds of jobs all over the board for you. and by advocating getting an undergrad degree, i am not saying to go into mountains of debt, i'd saying to use your in state public universites and for many lower income students or non-schoalrship students to utilize local junior/community colleges to save ever more money before transferring to a 4 year university. a grad/professional degree is highly nuanced and pretty much narrows your range of job opportunities to a single industry. also, a grad/professional degree also scares away a lot of potential employers who are not looking for a phd in a given area or are not looking to hire a law grad.

Obama has been a supporter of community and junior colleges. A lot of his wanting people to get more education is so people have the workforce training to perform jobs. When Barbour was governor, he pushed for more money (where and when it was available) for community and junior colleges in Mississippi for the same reason.

The education of our workforce is not a partisan issue-- it is a bipartisan-- maybe even nonpartisan-- matter.

But the big firms absolutely do care about about where your diploma came from. Like Johnson was saying firms have grade cutoff points from MC that they would be lower for a OM or grade cut offs for an OM that would be waay lower for a Vandy kid. Medium to big firm initial hiring is all about that name on your degree.

The best bang for your buck in education for a lot of students (I would even say most students) is a junior college. You can easily knock out 60 hours in 2 summers plus a fall and a spring and head into a 4-year school only 1 year late, but almost half-way to a degree. And for a lot of students, an AA is really all they need.

There are like 5 maybe that have transparent statistics about their hirings. Besides average salary is a terrible metric to describe the employment outcomes for a class. If a quarter of the class gets good jobs at 100k, then another quarter gets **** law jobs at 35k, then half of the class gets no job. The "average salary" of the class is $67,500. Well that's not bad. If I go and I'm in the middle of my class, then I'll get a 70k job! <div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div> <div>

what really blows my mind is that law school tuition for my law school has risen about 50% since i graduated in 2007. in state went from around $15K to now about $23K and out of statewent from about $21K tonow aournd$32K. the market has gotten shittier and the tuition has skyrocketed. there is no way in hell i'd pay the going rates in today's market unless i was a genius and was going to a top 10 school and/or had the hook up with a guaranteed job after law school (family firm, current employer, etc).
