and surrender so easy for Russell to get the back-up job....He's got a long way to go from all accounts BUT, he has a long run every scrimmage. He has shown he can run the ball.

With Russell being a thrower and not much of a runner, and with us having very few WR's we can put on the field, and all these true Freshman needing time to learn the system and adjust to college football- just shows me those thinking Russell could start against Jackson State are kidding themselves- cause it aint gonna happen.

If he is working really hard at knowing this offense and he is coming to alot of practices to learn what is going on, he has a chance to be almost caught up for August. Relf seems to be improving almost every practice. His accuracy is improving but still isn't where you would want him to start. He might be a good change of pace QB like UF used Tebow his freshman year.

I would love for Mullen to redshirt Russell. He has a complete pass from me next season. I don't care if we only win 3 games. I just don't want to burn Russell in a meaningless 2nd half of the season. Redshirt him, let him get beat up as a scout teamer, beef him up, and have 4 solid years of Russell. Hopefully, Lee and Relf will be serviceable next year.

The QB's are not executing the offense, if Tyler isn't more capable than the two we have, I will be surprised and glad he can redshirt. We are going to play lots of freshmen for the next 2-3 years.

Didn't say it was going to happen. Knowing the MSSTATE football program we all know and love, Russell will come in for mop up duty against Jackson State and tear his knee in half, ending his career. A redshirt will delay the inevitable career ending injury that is to occur.

My dream is comes in and rescues us from the inaccuracy we currently have on the field. You have to hit the 9 yarder.

....I have thought that Relf would come in and play the role of the freshman Tim Tebow. I think that is the best way to use him, and I'll be very surprised if he doesn't.

We just better hope that we can get just enough drives to win if our defense is keeping us in games. Tyler may start if he can just hit the normal passes and not screw up too bad. Sounds like they are improving which is something we haven't seen in a long time. Carrol actually got worse with Woody's coaching.

That being said, I don't think Tyler will redshirt.

not gonna happen. Relf sucks. Hell of a call there, downtown.

We'd be better off with Bumphis/Davis running out of the QB spot.

Tyler and the freshmen WR might be the difference in bowling or sitting at home for Christmas. Right now Tyson is almost mediocre and Relf is like Burns for AU, can't throw it worth a damn consistently. Tyler will more than likely be the best QB by midseason. The big question is, do we lose a half year on him getting up to speed?

From most of the reports, Coach Mullen has been on the QBs about not being very accurate. From what I saw of Tyler in the championship game, that is one of his upsides. He seemed to be pretty accurate on almost all of his throws.

I'll take it a step further than that.... Redshirt Russell AND Bumphis. Short on WR you say? So the 17 what. what are we not short on?

but I dont see him starting a game before the 6th game of the season unless Lee gets hurt, especially if Relf is able to contribute at all. Going thru Spring practice makes a tremendous amount of difference. Alot of the recent QB's you have seen come in and start have usually graduated early and gone thru Spring practice with the team

...note that I said "Freshman year." Direct snap runs. I know he can't throw, but as Coach pointed out, he has had long run after long run in scrimmages.

Thanks for all you add to the board, though.

Russell want redshirt, he'll play. As for as the future on QB's at Msu, I believe Mullen will sign better QB's and until we get 3 or 4 deep everyone will get a chance to play early at Msu.
With little depth or no depth, but really not having a QB, why would you want to redshirt Russell if he is at least the 2nd best QB, let him play and go get 2 or 3 QB's every year.

he was a raw talent coming out of high school. He's probably spent enough time around Mullen by now to forget everything that Croom ever "tought" him (i.e he seems to be getting better with every practice). He may suprise us after getting more actual coaching.

has no chance of being ahead of Tyler Russell on any depth chart, except in the Bizarro World. And I have my doubts that Tyson Lee will remain ahead of Tyler Russell on a depth chart for any real length of time.

If you don't believe me, drive over to Starkville and watch a practice. One is all it takes.

and having to rely on Freshman to learn the offense in 3 weeks, I'd like to know why people think we are going to put another true Freshman in there thats a "thrower"...I believe you Doc on your assessment of their shittiness, but we arent going to have some high-level passing game ready to go in 3 weeks of August practice. We are going to rely on people that know the offense and QB's that can make 20 yard runs until these young guys get enough practice.

If you think Mullen is getting on WR's *** that have been in college a couple years about running correct routes, just wait till those Freshmen start in August.

I think our head coach is going to play the best players on the field regardless of class. I just hope that the program has enough good players that Mullen can redshirt some to build stronger junior and senior classes four years from now. Personally I feel that we are only hurting in a few areas. Croom did build some of the positions. Unfortunately the two that we really need, WR and QB it appears he did not. You really don't know until you line them up and play. Hell we might finish 4 and 8 or we might finish 8 and 4 or somewhere in between. You just don't really know what our talent level is. I feel that's this due to the last coaching staff sucking hind tit. You don't know if our sucking was due to poor coaching, poor talent or a combination of both. You would hope that after five years Croom did manage to get a little talent. Prdicting next year record is pretty hard. A guy at my office and I always pick the record and put a little money on it as to who gets the closes. I think I am going to predict 4 wins and hope I loose my *** off. You never know our new staff could turn things around a few games in.

but in the basic fundamentals of playing the position, our guys struggle. I'm not even talking about running the offense, I mean in the QB drills, the QB/RB drills, the QB/WR drills. I don't expect a fancy passing game for J-State, or even Ole Miss for that matter, but I expect a guy to be able to throw a slant route, and I figure whoever can do that will play 75% of the snaps. I haven't seen that guy on the practice field yet.

I think it may be a stretch to assume that Relf can nab these 20 yard runs (at least consistently) against an sec opponent.

Just sayin...

during Croom's tenure. ALL of our starting QBs from Conner to Henig to Carroll got much, much worse after suffering through one of Sly and Woody's spring tutoring sessions. Let's all hope we get the reverse effect with a guy with the track record teaching QBs that Mullen has.

Tebow = Good running back with pretty good throwing arm (ball goes generally where he throws it with semi-tight spiral and good velosity) Relf = Appears to have running ability (see Egg Bowl escapability) with ?????? throwing arm (has no idea where the ball is going!). Comparing Relf to Tebow (even in general terms) is like comparing Garo Yepremian to John Elway!
