Did you forget the inspiring "Winston Churchill say...." speech on national television? It wasn't a minority of State fans that ate that **** up. As much as people hate on the Crooms daddy now, he had quite the loyal group of apologists right up until nearly the end. It just happened to take 37 yards of total offense to FINALLY open their eyes.

not stupid, garbled quotes of Churchill that made Oregeron seem palatable as an orator.

it was PR. I will still say that to this day.

when he got those chances alot of times...

Announcing to America on ESPN when they were here for that first Spring Game that he thought a shovel pass was a trick play
Wearing the hoodie on the sideline
"Winston Churchill say"
Bob Davie telling the entire country Crooms said he would retire before switching to the Spread as we get beat 3-2 on national TV

was that he would never fire one of his assistants. This was when a lot of the MSU faithful were calling for McCorvey's head. I think he later backtracked from that statement somewhat. It was stupid at the time born of stubborn defiance perhaps.

But for everything that others said about him, not for anything he ever said himself.

The worst things I remember ever being said about him was his refusal to use TOs and "approach" of running the clock out before the half.

and ruined it plain and simple. He just wasnt qualified for the job he got. Joker Phillips would have been a much better choice. ****, I would have been a better choice. At least I would have had enough sense to hire good coaches that could recruit and then get out of their way and let them do their job.

he was horrible. But put him in front of a group of people or representing the university publicly - I thought he was outstanding even with his Churchill quote.

from your connections to the coaches, but it seemed to me like Croom let them do their job, but like you said, many of them were not very good coaches. Croom probably should have done his job more- he just seemed very lazy to me, and you can not be lazy when you are going up against the Saban's, the Meyer's, and even the Nutt's of the college football world. That may have meant jumping on his assistants asses more. And that may go back to hiring his best friends as assistants- which was a mistake on his part as well. Woody McCorvey was a horrible OC with no accountability and he never got pressure from Croom to make things better or to do better on his part.

Like this past year- when Torbush came up with a horrible game plan against Auburn, I heard that Dan jumped his ***. Sure enough, we started to see a little bit more blitzing and a better gameplan the next week against Vandy.

Saban is the king of jumping people's asses.

Woody wasnt the problem- he was running what Crooms told him to run...Woody called the plays, but that was Crooms gameplan every week we went out there

Unfortunately, that was Larry's primary qualification for a coaching candidate. And no I'm not being facetious. Its true. One day I googled Larry interviews from the time that Croom was hired. Go find it yourselves and see if Croom didn't deliver exactly EVERYTHING that Larry was looking for in a coach.

As bad as Croom was as an HC, I have to blame Larry for it more than Croom himself. And trust me, I hold plenty of blame for Croom too.

Would Crxxm have taken the initiative to contact ESPN and get himself on those shows on an off day during August practice? Probably not. PR is getting yourself (or your team) put into the spotlight.
