For someone who hasn't lived in Jackson in 6 years...

Who is this lumumba guy and how bad would it be for the city?

It would be a horrible PR problem for the city and would probably grind city government to a halt for four years.

One phenomena that will come from this is that "black-flight" will probably out pace "white-flight". Good people of all colors are gonna flee this disaster.

Its a very bad result for the city, but we should not get carried away...

it means a dysfunctional government that gets nothing done (similarly to what we've had for years) but with the added embarrassment of the crazy things this guy is going to say.

I posted not too terribly long ago RE Jackson....

If you took Memphis and subtracted entertainment, increased the crime & traffic, while simultaneously decreasing population; you'd have Jackson....

we should call it "Lil Detriot", even... B'ham is suckin' hind teat, too.

Holy ****! I read only the first paragraph of his interview in that link and I cannot fathom how any human being of voting age could elect this man to any position of authority much less mayor of a state's capital city! I'll read the rest later, but I have a baseball game to watch/listen to.

For what it's worth, I live in GA these days and don't have a dog in the fight. I DO have one in this game and we need to take care of business soon.

Right...

...and Nome, Alaska is better than Honolulu, Hawaii. This, according to the loyal citizens of Nome. Funny how the whole national media constantly makes fun of Starkville but never once have I read them talking similar **** about Jackson. Just one more thing: If you ever need critical medical care from a major medical facility with prestigious doctors, go to Memphis or Tupelo. Or better yet, go to whatever passes for a hospital in Starkville. Don't want the weirdos at St Dominics removing your kidney just for fun.

You're the stupid one. Sit back and see how 17'd up Jackson gets. It's got nothing to do with Starkville or any other city in this state dubmass

I work in the construction industry as the drafter for an architect. The story went out late this afternoon that unless you are a minority-owned firm or get a minority-operated firm to do ANY construction project in Jackson, you will never get a building permit under Choke-a-chicken's new permit department head. Lumumba has also made it clear he plans to bring free health care to the whole city -- regardless of what it costs. No jobs, no development, streets, sewer and water falling apart - but you can be healthy in the midst of the slums. Anyone know good land in Rankin or Madison County?

A lot of naive people on this board actually thought Lee was going to win. I knew Lumumba was going to win when I saw Lee won the NE Jackson vote in the first election. I knew in the runoff it would similar to the Marshand Crisler race last time against Johnson. Anybody that carries NE Jackson is sure to lose in the runoff.

I live in Jackson...

..I like living in Jackson & don't give a **** if a bunch of nuts who know nothing about Jackson suddenly acts like they give a damn about who is mayor of Jackson. What the 17 do you care who is mayor of Jackson? You either live or go to school in the paradise called Starkville. You've got it make. Anyway, I live in a neighborhood that is about 50% white 50% African-American. We have a 24 hour/around the clock neighborhood watch (consisting of 10 neighborhood volunteers). Therefore my neighborhood is self-policed, quiet, friendly & thank god none of you ****-talking kooks live in it.

Check the crime rates in Jackson. Then check the property value decline. Then check the number of businesses moving out. Then check the school system. And if you still think Jackson is ok with their medical community, consider where those drs. are spending their money. Jackson is the Cleveland of the south and could be headed for the Detroit of the south. With a Detroit native in charge.

He probably won't be able to do much damage directly, what with Jackson's weak-mayor form of government.

But it's a PR nightmare that will undermine efforts to sell the city to businesses and prospective residents.

That's the first thing I thought about...

If I'm Baptist and I've got the stroke to finance a new $300M hospital (and they do), Madison county is looking pretty attractive right now.

I'm glad you're happy with it. Let us know the tax drain on your wallet in the coming years. Your fellow Jacksonians who are not as blessed as you to be in a good neighborhood will suffer the consequences of a ****** police force.

I do not live in Starkville. I do have friends/family in Jackson, and even if I didn't, it's the capitol city...and the downtown revitalization plan is DEAD. OVER. CAPUT.

Unless one has $ for private schools and can sleep well knowing you have the neighborhood Paul Blart on the lookout for you and your family.
