We survived Frank Melton. It'll be ok.

But it's fun to freak out over the guy with the funny name.

I had just as many reservations about Lee as I do Lumumba.

Lumumba's win concerns me in Rankin Co. The rats in Jackson will run out of crumbs and start venturing out.

I half agree with you....

no mayor could be worse than Melton, but what possible reservations could you have about Lee that could compare with Chokwe?

I get what you are saying but...

I'm not sure you understand how weird it sounds that you need 24 hour around the clock volunteers to keep your neighborhood safe. That is reason enough to question living in Jackson and really shouldn't be used as a reason for the city being awesome.

And yes, I live in a city larger than Jackson and wouldn't live here if we needed to do what you guys are doing.

ETA: each to his own when deciding where to live but to many of us, needing that much security is not a positive endorsement of a city. Just sayin

Young guy with a strange eagerness to shoot up the political ranks...

which raises natural distrust with me. Just a bad vibe that he'd do anything to get some power. Something just didn't sit right with me about Lee. His commercial made vomit in my mouth a little. My pinko commie is showing but he's obviously a Republican panderer and that's just stupid if you're trying to get elected in Jackson. He'll be running statewide for something in 10 years... as a republican... guaranteed.

All Lumumba, just like anyone who may have been elected, has to do is fix the Jackson infrastructure and they'll be the greatest mayor in Jackson history.

I thought Melton did a half way decent job-better than Harvey Johnson. Kenneth Stokes seemed to be more under control with Melton as mayor.

"Young guy with a strange eagerness to shoot up the political ranks"? Sounds like someone else. Someone in the WH matter of fact. And I find it comical how you believe Lee is a Republican. I'm assuming that's only because white conservatives have backed someone they believe would make a difference and actually have a chance of getting elected in Jackson.
Go ahead and lock it up because someone called you out.

Lee reminded me of every uber conservative republican in that his political ads reminded me of how awesome he was at going to church. He flat out went after Lumumba for basic democrat ideals. He's a republican and it's got noting to do with skin color of voters.

Obama was a product of a country fed up with the Bush administration and I voted for Hillary anyway.

You seem to be saying that if you even suspect that a guy might be somewhat conservative, then there is no more "democratic" candidate, no matter how horrific, that you wouldn't prefer?

I suspect a number of neighborhoods in Rankin and Madison counties will be gated and more private security firms hired in the next several years. Local police forces in neighboring communities will have to be beefed up also. I think it`s going to be that bad.

Jackson having a Rankin Co republican would be bad because.... The Braves could have been in Jackson, the Pearl River in Jackson could be a vibrant park and market area, ummmm... I'm running out if reasons.

Even a died in the wool liberal should prefer Ted Cruz or Jim DeMint as mayor over Lumuba.

He probably won't be able to do much damage directly, what with Jackson's weak-mayor form of government.

But it's a PR nightmare that will undermine efforts to sell the city to businesses and prospective residents.

This could not be more true. The guy will have little to no effect on public policy, but economic development in Jackson proper just came to a grinding halt.

Who mentioned re-election?

Attention new posters... there are a few of us on this board that have voted democrat. Deal with it.

As this thread pertains to Jackson. It's would not have been as good as you imagined with your guy (trust me I know... Obama and all), and it won't be as bad you imagine with the other guy (I survived Bush ok enough and didn't have to move out of the country).

Ah, the church thing. That'll expose every true Republican every time. It's common knowledge Democrats don't believe in God. Just out of curiosity, you have no problem with Mmmbop and his racist beliefs? Is that really who you want representing Jackson?

And Obama was shooting up those ranks way before a country was "fed up with the Bush admin".

Not just bad news for the metro, but bad news for the state. I suspect this will hasten the decline of Flowood, which will become Clinton/Ridgeland over the next 10-20 years.

In 20 to 30 years, this same electorate will be able to influence state wide elections...

Yeah. No. As a young democrat in Jackson, I'd rather have a pseudo republican than a radical black panther who hates me before he knows me. This guy is trouble. His election alone did more damage to Jackson than any of his policies ever will. This is bad.

Baptist wants to build a new hospital in Madison irrespective of this election..

they've been trying to for years. They also just made a major investment in their Jackson hospital.

I feel bad for the people that devoted so much time to get the right guy elected. It's hard to make change when you get so many uneducated idiots voting in one city at one time. You can't fix stupid and gullible.

It's cool if you are a Democrat, but Chokwe makes Obama look like Rick Santorum.

What I don`t get is why the blacks in Jackson are still doing race. Hell they absolutely control the city now. Why elect a one dimensional candidate like Lumumba to continue to wage a war that they have already won ? It looks to me like the battle should have shifted to the economy and ways to improve their faltering city and they`re still hung up in the 50`s.
