It's all about the D

This is the time of the year that I start to look at who might be around in late November. It is pretty simple to figure out. There are only 3 teams in 1A who have defenses that have given up less than a 100 points. Sussex at 70, Parry McClure at 78 and Riverheads at 89. I think this is a great indicator of how teams will fare in the playoffs

D is what wins games and I have to say this alot of the TDs GW has given up was against our JV. I know that counts as the total but our varsity hasn't given up many at all. Again I know the team score is what matters but the Varsity has on give up 10 Tds all year 70 points isn't bad.

I happen to agree that it is an indicator but you gotta take into account the opponents. I know there are some that get up in arms about that but it is part of the equation. I will say that there are certain teams that the red team make a point to hold to as low of a score as possible while others they seem to be fine with them scoring a token TD or two. Call it what you want but it's at least the perception from the fence anyway. I will say again that I agree that it is one of if not the leading factor in projecting how a team will do. Good defense will travel well in the playoffs. How does the rest of the top teams break out? I hadn't even looked at the overall stats yet this year.

PM starting defense has given up 44 pts. 34 was in first two games of the season. Sussex is dominating as well. Going to be an interesting playoffs!!

Don't know who comes up with these numbers and it really doesn't mean much, but Hurleys figures are 460-149

I know I'm not saying they don't and yes that means the total would drop for them to. I was just saying GW is under 100 for just varsity.

I figured I would resurrect this thread, given the 2 best defenses in the state in 1A will be playing next week in the championship game. I know the numbers can be skewed because of the district competition, but for the most part, you don't get to Salem without playing damn good defense. For the record, I believe GW would be 3rd in this category
