SEC brass could be in as much trouble as Auburn. And that would please me greatly.

Hey Slive, don't let this cowbell hit you in the *** on the way out.

I see what you're saying....yes the recording is a must....but why would ESPN report this if it hasn't been verified 100%.

Out of the 1 million stories ESPN reports a year...how many times are they wrong. Especially with something like this.
Why would they report this if it isnt verified? Uh...because its ESPN. They are 1 step above grocery checkout line tabloids.
****, have you ever watched or read the hundreds of predictions when it comes to new coaches? They are constantly wrong and dont verify ****.

Not saying thats what happened here, just saying ESPN and breaking news that surrounds allegations is wrong time after time after time.

I understand schadenfreude. I thoroughly enjoyed a good laugh after the Jacksonville State - Blackbear game earlier this year. But this is a different level -- what does Auburn crashing and burning do for MSU, really?

My thoughts:

1. It's already sent up a flare -- the national media already looked at the SEC as a dirty conference, and this just confirms it for everybody who was on the fence. There are a ton of people around the nation who would love nothing better than for one of the SEC members to get the death penalty, and for the league to start cracking down hard on everything the other members do. If the Big 10leven, the Pac 10, et al are celebrating this situation, I'm not.

2. It may just be me, but since the Sherrill days, Auburn is not a team that perennially scares me. ****, they have a national championship contending team with an unstoppable Heisman-level player this year and we were a dropped pass away from beating them. We rarely go head to head against them in recruiting -- realistically what do they get out of Mississippi, one or two players a year? We play them once a year. It's just not like their demise would affect us positively very much. In fact, I can see some collateral damage from bringing such negative attention to the SEC.

3. Related to that, I know some people are all excited about the national attention, but personally I don't like this kind of press... I know Bond is completely clean in this.* I know we didn't do anything wrong.* I know we've never done anything even borderline illegal during our recruitment of a player.* But even knowing all that to be completely true and accurate, it still makes me a little queasy to (a)have one of our own go give testimony under oath about anything recruiting related; (b) know that we have recorded conversations of meetings with recruits (shudder); and (c) be the team playing the "bad guy" by turning in - and maybe starting a war with - another SEC institution. It's just not my idea of fun.

But like I said, I'm open to this -- as everyone knows, I'm always up for a party, so let me hear why I should be celebrating.

ESPN checks, double checks and triple checks their stories more than any other major news media outlet and it's not even close.

There's a HUGE difference between predicting a new head coach or an offseason free agent acquisition. This is not even in the same ball park.

They would not put this out there if it wasn't 100% verified. Name one major story that they have been wrong on...ever. This isn't a Coach K to the Lakers prediction. You are getting the two seriously twisted. I'm sure they've been wrong once in 30 years...but they wouldn't even touch this with a 100 foot pole if it weren't the truth.

There's a difference between a story and a prediction.

You say "ESPN and breaking news that surrounds allegations is wrong time after time after time."

Refresh my memory.

They don't put stories this serious out there unless it's the truth.

but we actually have a coach who can recruit on his name alone now. We're a hot item. If money is taken out of the game for a little while, doesn't this help us more now than it would have years ago?We don't have the cash to spend on players like Florida, LSU, and Alabama. So if anything, wouldn't it bring down their appeal more than ours? The exposure on television is still going to be there. Yeah they still have the venues and the prestige, but we have a pretty solid coach with an attractive offensive scheme. We're the ones on the rise. Just a thought.<div>
</div><div>Everyone loves a good story. ESPN has the rights to the BCS this year. I don't want to sound like an Auburn fan, but ESPN definitely has an agenda to make this as interesting as possible. "SOURCES" says it all.</div><div>
</div><div>I agree with the "why Auburn" sentiments in terms of them not really ever being a threat, but you know what? 17 'em. 17 Cecil Newton. 17 Cheesedick. 17 that eagle that flies around and ***** on innocent people. 17 all that toilet paper, too. If they're gonna be ignorant and blame our entire fan base for this, they can suck a giant death penalty dick.</div><div>
</div><div>I don't like being the rat, but by season's end our wins will speak the loudest. And so will Auburn's. All twelve of them that get vacated.</div>

I believe that this thing is going to come down to our staff being so freaked out about how open and 17ing stupid Cecil Newton was during the entire process that they didn't have much a choice to report it.I think they were backed into a corner from the ridiculousness of it all. Once they reported it, they recorded anything further to cover their asses. If I am right, then all we have to do is sit back and wait for the full report to come out.

The man is a dubmass and that will play into our favor. For God's sake, Cecil said in the damn press that his son would have been a rented mule if he had come to State. It is a Freudian slip of epic proportions.

Lastly: Greg Byrne > Cecil Newton. This is enough to make me optimistic.

that we would get Cam- it wasn't outside the realm of possibility when we reported this- and that someone like Auburn would get pissed off about it, and turn us in. Well, if that happened, MSU would need to prove that we didn't pay off Cam. We were basically covering our own ***. We are dealing with sleaze here, after all.

One worry of mine, whats to stop the Newtons from saying that we offered him money if he does end up getting caught? Are we in the clear from that type of allegation?

If you were a recruiter and something like fish was going down, would you not on your follow up conversation have a little something to cover your ***. Hell this is not the first time someone has asked for a little something extra for the family....

You can take it to the bank, they have something credible. Probably if Auburn had fell on their *** this year it would not be such a big deal. But with all the hoop la going on, it was to much to take for someone.... That is the someone with the tapes.

The question is now how did the money sift in. You know it has to be the church. The question is now them proving the money went in. If Auburn plays Georgia this weekend they will be 100 percent fried if they play CAM. Up in till now they can play ignorance but after this weekend they are in quick sand......

Most accurate post yet. This has nothing to do with doing the right thing, sour grapes, or a conspiracy theory. This is all about how 17ing stupid and brazen Cecil Newton was during the recruiting process. MSU had no choice but to cover its *** or it could have gone down the tubes as well (and we cannot really rely on the SEC or the NCAA for fair due process, can we?). <div>
</div><div>On another note, you better believe that ESPN has proof that this happened. You better believe with the FBI involved, not to mention threats of libel and slander, that ESPN triple checked all its sources before coming out with that story. Also, the way Chizik lashed out yesterday, without ever denying anything instead relying on "man behind the curtain" conspiracy allegations, he is as desperate as they come and knows he is screwed.</div>

or at least I'm waiting for Auburn to bring this up. The real reason that all of this is coming out now is because ESPN wants Boise in the National Championship game. That is all.

They had solid proof that Albert Means was offered money by at least six schools and only one got hammered - the one that got him.

No doubt in my mind Cam wanted to attend MSU. We may have been undefeated right staring at a BCS bowl with Cam. You know where Auburn is now but it may all come crashing down. Was it worth it, Cecil?

If it's true, greed may cost other Universities and the SEC millions. There's a good chance now that no SEC team is in the NC game. Not to mention what will happen to Auburn in the years to come.

If Auburn hadn't bought Cam Newton, he'd be wearing maroon and white and we'd be 8-1 at a minimum right now and looking at an outside shot at a BCS bowl game. So a giant <17> you to Auburn.

Fist of all, Auburn had to have paid Newton for it to an infraction. If there was a 'taped conversation', It would be out now. Its just suspect how this info came out AFTER Cam ecame clear Heisman winner and Au became no.1 in BCS. Also, the notion ESPN does hard core fact checking is laughable. Duke Lacrosse ring a bell? The guy that broke this recent story also broke the stories that Texas was headed to the Pac-10 and that Bob Stoops was named the new Irish head coach. How is it this guy got the story. Next, the 'cheating' story is illegal. The release of Academic Records is 100% illegal. As long as Auburn didnt pay, which I'm confident they didn't, this is a non issue. Also, Auburn has one of the most stern compliance depts. They had all of the info, If they were true, he wouldnt have been played. As sad as it seems, this is character assassination, plain and simple. Either Mullen or Meyer are behind it! Who else, besides the Academic Dept/records dept. could have released the cheating information. Its also laughable that an agent would give a discount! HA!
