Choice came down to SLU and NU...guess the unhealthy influence of AAU ball continues.
Hiring coaches, fathers, brothers, sisters, etc. seems to be the new mode du jour to get big time prospects to commit. I think that's unhealthy.Huh? Unhealthy because he went with the coach he had formed a relationship with? Who might well be a great guy? Do you know him?
It was SLU. There was no second. They can get him in. Illinois was going to struggle to get him in even with two of his buddies in the class. If he wasn't getting into Illinois, he wasn't getting into NU. I also was told to "follow the money" by a sportswriter close to the situation. NU obviously wasn't going to do that. Neither was Illinois.

Rough start to 2017 recruiting. So for those of you who follow such things more closely than I, who are our targets still available? And who would you predict will be the first 2017 NU commit? Thanks.
Follow the money? That's a helluva serious charge with absolutely no accountability. I absolutely hate it when adults start trashing kids for making decisions that impact their lives. Everyone has "inside info," but nobody has the guts to back it up.
Start?
It was a rough start in June, or maybe last November.
This is a 24-plus month process with two months left. Let's hope for good news soon...
Gee, seems like I took quite the bashing when I began raising concerns in June. Hey Va, willy, the rest of you very nice responsive posters - thanks for all the kind words. Looking like you all were wrong... Again...

There is an interview with Collins talking the current state of recruiting over on 247, check it out.......

I told you last week that it was SLU for several reasons. This was not a surprise today.

The naysayers are being premature as is their wont. The recruiting season is long from over but too funny that they can not recognize the basketball talent on the current team and the level of talent that NU is recruiting. Failing again in their Analytical Basketball 101 skills.
There's still no reason for concern. Let's see what Eastern does and let's see if we strike out for the entire signing period before you gloat.
By the way, pretty sick to root against your supposedly favorite team.
Not rooting against them, but calling out each of you. Months ago, I was concerned and thought the state of recruiting was worthy of discussion. I was flamed by the koolaid klan, most back and accounted for here, and accused of being anti CCC, anti NU, a jerk. Well, looks like my concerns were well founded. So, yes, to all you that made your belittling comments, eat crow.
Perhaps the next worthy topic might be what to do if our A and B list are not coming. Hold the schollies and plan more 5th year transfers? Seek a real transfer or two in the next class? Bring in a giant 2018 class?
I am among the group that thinks we are two seasons out from seeing a real improvement on the court and in the standings. If so, then this season won't help next year's recruiting either. So, which way to go? Are you willing to roll the dice on a Vassar, Skelly, Lindsey type or rather tuck away schollies?
I hang up and listen while the koolaid klan continues their attacks and hope a few of the real bball minds might engage...
Bob wrote "concerned", then got flamed for it. He was rightfully concerned. A few more arrows in the quiver (it's Olympics season, people), but not many. I hope the Cats don't wind up swimming in a bay full of super-bacteria. (Olympics in Rio season, people.) (Then again, Wildcat Jordan Wilmovsky swims in the sludge - 10k open water marathon - Tuesday morning.) (Also, he's in the 1500 finals in 15 minutes.)Not rooting against them, but calling out each of you. Months ago, I was concerned and thought the state of recruiting was worthy of discussion. Why not just wait until the process is complete before declaring victory on the Class of 2017?
Deep thoughts by the most frequent naysayer:
1) Duke, UK and Louisville have won a number of NCAA titles over the past 25-30 years and they are called blue blood programs. Louisville is embroiled in one of these biggest recruiting scandals. Comparing NU's recruiting to Duke and Kentucky who attract more McDonald All-Americans than any other programs is comparing apples to oranges;
2) NU has a number of scholarship offers to PGs, SGs and some big guys;
3) If NU loses its top returning player then the team will have trouble. If Maryland loses Melo Trimble then they would have trouble. That is why Collins was so down when Vic had to surgery last season. They lost their most athletic player and still won 20 games and 8 Big 10 games which ranks right up with the top NU seasons ever.
4) NU will not hold onto scholarships and get a class of two freshmen and maybe three frosh. The program will not get a 5th year transfer. Remember they tried that with Canyon Berry.
Hopefully, that helps out with some naysayers' basketball education.

At this juncture, with nobody committed and several targets having selected elsewhere, it is reasonable to be concerned.Why was he "rightfully concerned?"
NU is not sitting on their laurels. They have a number of scholarship offers out there. And back up options.
They have two spots open. The starting five is McIntosh, Lindsey, Law, Falzon and Pardon. No, I do not have special connections but I have two eyes that can see who the most talented five on the team are. But keep the distortions comings to fit your point of view which is totally off base.
Good post. Collins is aiming high. He's not going to get every top recruit he's chasing. But I still stand by my belief that at the end of this recruiting cycle, we will have a great class, not just a good one.
You're still totally out of line and demonstrate a sickening lack of real spirit for our team.
As for eating crow, you can't judge a recruiting period for years. Whatever Coach does with these scholarship spots, you won't be able to tell me to eat crow for several cycles.
