Oh, I thought it had already been confirmed. No big surprise I guess. Just no room for it.

Personally, I'd be fine with keeping it and doing away with creampuff games altogether. Would obviously have to apply to all teams.

Gamecocks should have always been playing a Missouriesque schedule. Should have always been 3 cream puffs & Clemson ooc. For some asinine reason they loaded up the future schedule with ACC opponents and App St. I know those games are unattractive and this program is no stranger to struggling in said games; but still, it’s better to load up on some wins and get some meaningful reps down the depth chart.

But now that all the P4 is gonna be playing 10 P4 games there isn’t much room in the schedule anymore for up to 4 cream puffs (SC always limited to 3 obviously), the Gamecocks always need to have 2 “should be wins” on the schedule. I would like to see them play an in state FCS team every year- throw some money their way and then just whoever else for that final spot.

I'm sticking with my belief that P4 teams should not be allowed to play any FCS teams in the regular season. If they want to play a scrimmage type game for the Spring game, that would be OK.

I agree. It's getting to where you're nearly a month or even a month into the doggone season and some teams still haven't played a team of consequence.

If that was universal then sure. But since it’s not I don’t see the point in making the schedule more difficult than it already is. There’s no benefit to the team.

I was with you up to the FCS thing. I get that it gives money to the smaller, in state school.

Other than that, it has no redeeming quality as far as a game is concerned. It's a waste of time, imo.

I suggested having an FCS team come in and play for the spring game as an idea.

Edit: I then read your comment on it being universal, and agree. I think all P4 teams should not schedule FCS schools outside of spring games.

FBS or nothing for serious football-playing schools. No, we don't owe SC State or Wofford a payday. But we don't need to exceed what other Power Four schools will be doing in this regard, either. The row we hoe will already be tough enough. Amen.

Yep. We've had one of the Top 5/10 toughest schedules in college football the last few years. Adding an additional SEC will just reinforce that fact. Having an FBS team on the schedule is just fine.

Aye, and fear of being exposed by a FBS team is not a good reason to leave them off the schedule.

Spring game concept sort of intriguing but a reason I want them to play an FCS school is to get some in season reps for those guys further down the depth chart. With the portal the rosters aren’t the same anymore from spring to August.

There’s also been occasion where without the FCS or at least a non P4 gimme they don’t make a bowl. And maybe in that instance they shouldn’t. But just pointing out that if making a bowl game is important then those games have been helpful in that way.

And yeah, if all the competition was only playing FBS schools then that is easier to live with. It’s just that they won’t.

That is where I come at it from. No reason to make football playing life more difficult than the new schedule implementations will make it. Already tough enough as it is and it’s going to be a rare thing to see anyone play 11-12 P4 opponents. But also not really concerned about being a serious football playing place.

I get that. But my first thought was, if we're using this game to get reps for guys who otherwise might not play, we're conceding that its not really a competitive matchup to begin with.

Oh most definitely. I really like having one game a season where you can just watch and not wonder about the outcome. But I see the importance of building depth due to injury. That’s always a factor but now with a minimum of 10 P4 fames & 9 conference games that likelihood increases.

That's probably fortuitous.

There are plenty of G5 schools to schedule for interesting matchups, with that said they are probably going to either A) expect a home on home series or B) The payday is going to cost some very serious money, vs the payday for an FCS school.
Not advocating playing an FCS school, but never discount the economics of the situation.

The players are paid employees who are paid to play P4 football. They shouldn't be allowed to play against FCS level players and teams.

Scheduling FCS teams so the backups can get reps is sort of like the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality or the rec league rule that every player has to play. If a player isn't good enough to play at the level of football he's being paid to play, he shouldn't play and should probably lose his job as a professional football player at that level.
