and now we have proof:

My name is Tony Robertson. I played OL at MSU from 86-90. I talked to Greg Byrne after the game to discuss the future of MSU football and how close we are to being a contender year in and year out, but we must stay the course. He agreed and said he and CC had a discussion earlier about that same topic.
This 17n idiot posts as mrob71 on jortworld. This fool is in Byrne's ear?

Hopefully Glen Young is in Byrne's ear as well.

Worth mentioning- Robertson was on only one winning MSU team and was a member of the now legendary Tech and 10 team.

Coached requested 4 years on top of whatever sanctions MSU received when he signed on knowing this would be a tough rebuilding job. I think we are in year 2 after the sanctions.

Exactly how dire and serious was your penalty? I understand the stigma of probation and all, but what exactly were the penalties that were enforced on MSU? To hear alot of people tell it, it seems like yall got raped SMU style.

....but it's nowhere near as bad as its legend. The thing that probably hurt us most was the withholding of the bowl money in 2004. I think the scholarship limitations were pretty minimal.

each year. We also had a reduced # of on campus visits but we still didn't even use all of the reduced number.

We had an 81 man roster for 4 years and a 2 or 3 year ban on post season play. The probation is what's so bad. One mistake and we get the hammer dropped on us.</p>

"Hell Larry....this is bad...i think i'm going to need 8 years to turn this thing around its so bad"- Coach34

"ok Coach...you're hired"- Larry Templeton

hurt more then the scholarship penalties. We had a loss of 2 scholarships off the 85 (not the 25 per year) and limited visits. Never used all the visits and since the last 4-5 scholarships out of the 85 tend to go to walk-ons that really shouldn't hurt. We could still recruit full classes every year.... as long as we stayed at 83.

The loss of bowl revenue and 3-4 years of recruiting against every other school telling recruits we'd get the death penalty hurt the most.

The biggest problem was the players Crxxm inherited from Sherrill. There were several good players, but not nearly enough to be competitive in the SEC. And way, way, way too many quitters, losers, drug addicts/sellers, counterfeiters, generally worthless pieces of ****, etc. When Nick Turner told an assistant coach "F--- you," during Crxxm's first spring at MSU it was far from the first time a player had told a coach that over the past few years. Crxxm got rid of most of those players in his first year or two.

The NCAA sanctions were something like limited to 12 new scholarships the first year and limited to 75-80 total scholarships for a couple of years. Bad, but nothing earthshattering at all. Certainly no excuse to be sitting at 1-4 five years later.

I've never in my life seen a team so eaten up with cancers as what Sherrill left us with.

I'm not taking anything away from the job Tubberville did at UM though. He did a hell of a job.

we self imposed a limit of 23 signees the first year. After that the only limitation was a roster cap of 81 for 05 and 06 along with limited visits. Croom still didn't even use all his visits so that really wasn't a punishment.

I think your point is correct--the overall attitude of the players left AND our Strength and Conditioning. The longer Mike Grant was at State the weaker and slower our players got. I think that was a huge problem.

83. I think we are in the seventies and have been that way for a loooong time.

We had a loss of 2 scholarships off the 85
The loss of two scholarships, and no bowl during a year you weren't going anyway has to be one of the easiest penalties ever handed down by the NCAA.

And those 4 scholarships would be in addition to any attrition our program had (which was worse than most schools at that time) so it would be a real penalty. But the basic point we're all agreeing on is that the NCAA sanctions is no excuse for Crxxm's pitiful performance as our head coach.

would have told an applicant, "Hey, your first few years leading up to our sanctions won't count, the years in which we're under probation won't count, and then we'll give you 4 more years following penalties"? Oh that's right...

before the 2004 season began. Players that were sort of expected to be on the roster. They were either run off, or just quit for whatever reason. Any way you look at it, that is a huge change considering the probation, etc.. Bring on Maine!
