I've given up caring about the cowbells

The University has done all they can to educate the fans on the appropriate times to ring(short of having people in each section to tell people to stop). I guess it's maybe better than before, but when I say something to the fan ringing it when we are on defense, I get a look of disgust from them and they keep doing it.
Rant over.

I can't back the way our fans rang cowbells Saturday night any more than I do...

It was loud as its ever been when it was 10-7 and really all game up to late in the 4th. As for the fans looking at you with disgust when you tell then to stop I back them also. Good for them. Can't applaud them enough for rigging the **** out of it when we are on defense and for giving you the stink eye. Great move by them. I wish I was there so could pat them on the back and ring mine right next to them.

Doubt they get banned

So you are okay with the risk that the cowbells may be prohibited completely?

With a year like we're having. But if we were shaping up to be an 8 win team then they may all of a sudden be a problem.

No, but it's not really your job (or mine) to police the other fans at the stadium. I ring responsibly, and hope everyone else does. But trying to confront someone over it is just a losing proposition.

At the UK game on ESPN, it sounded like people right below the pressbox rang their bells non-stop. It could have come from another location but it was a vivid example of its abuse.

For the most part, people in the 5 or so rows in front of me will just tap someone (usually a kid) on the shoulder and signal "no" politely.

Has the SEC said anything about cowbells being rung inappropriately for the last couple of years? Not that I recall. When the ring-responsibly rules first came out they issued several fines when we messed up. It doesn't seem like they're doing that anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for responsible ringing and getting everyone to follow the rules. (I almost always do so myself, though I sometimes forget. You ever forgot? Happened to me.) But a few--or even quite a few--errant fans aren't going to get cowbells taken away. I don't think even a game where we all break the rules won't. They might start caring when we start winning, and there will probably be a shot or two over the bow before they change the cowbell rules.

But dear lord, don't ring them on offense. That's just stupid.

They need to operate the ring sign more consistently. I've noticed several occasions where they left it on or forgot to turn it off.

Yea since we were penalized for it and there is such an uproar today....

until we challenge for the SEC west Cowbells won't be an issue and won't be banned. If we starting winning and the big boys complain we will face possible "cowbell ban" or whatever they want to do. I'll wait to have that problem and glad;y make the trade....

I grew up with them banned my whole life and had em in every game and most away games no problem.

And you know what? If they do get banned I, and most fans that have known how to do it for years, will still get them into the stadium.

Ge over it. I'm ringing mine all game every game and especially against a #1 Bama team. I'm not the only one.

You mean like they have been for years and years until recently? Let them ban them. You aren't a true MSU fan if you can't sneak in a bell the size of the one worn by Babe the blue ox. As long as there is no NCAA penalty for noise makers then nothing can be done against the team. I remember back in college, during the ban years, I got caught one time sneaking one in. The next day I had to talk to the dean of students. He asked me if it was just a bell or whiskey. I told him just a bell. He then laughed the whole thing off and said he wanted us to bring bells, Jackie wanted us to bring bells, and security doesn't care but they have to stop you at the gate, but that once you get in they all look the other way.

I quit bringing a cowbell to games after I graduated college..

just something else to carry. And yes, the cowbell ringing on offense is ridiculous.

It is a stupid rule, and is a clear example of the the rich vs. the poor. We have decibel studies from all SEC stadiums and we are not even in the top half (even with cowbells). However, if Saban complains about the bells, they'll be gone next year. It is ridiculous that other school's get to vote on what our tradition can be, especially when it doesn't even put us in the top half for noise level. Almost every road game we have to play in an environment louder than our home field, but somehow our noise level gives us an unfair advantage??

I am over it. I quit saying things to fans at the LSU game. I agree it is not my place to police my section. I'm old enough to remember when it was not an issue. I was at the '74 Auburn game where it did become an issue. Ring them the whole game. I said I don't care anymore.

Has Saban or anybody other than us brought up cowbells? If anything was said after this game I missed it and Google failed me.

Man nothing worse than seeing a fan ringing while were on offense. Even though there are times for it if were on D and it's a big 3rd down ring the **** out of that bell.

Speaking of idiots, last year when tennessee came here a defensive linemen for TN was pumping up the crowd. Kid must just not have realized what he was doing. Idgit

Screw 'em. From an objective view (not maron colored) they're simply idiotic and do little more than reinforce an agrarian image. I don' think a game has ever been won or lost because of their presence.

From an "objective" view sure they are annoying. However, we are not objective and I cannot comprehend a State fan being against cowbells. Those bells are about of the only tradition that we have.

I comprehend that traditional line of thinking and for a long time I agreed with it and still respect it. I also comprehend the rebel flag and believe that it reinforces a racist image, real or imagined. In both instances, these two traditions have negative connotations, but that's just my opinion.

I'm not against them, but I don't take one to the games either. I guess in my old age I don't particularly like them, and especially when they're used at the wrong time. But wouldn't bother me if they were banned (and enforced) other than the fact that it's the SEC, and the "major" SEC teams, telling us what to do. Overall, I'm pretty neutral on the subject though.

From an objective point of view, 50,000 people paying thousands of dollars to buy tickets, tailgate, etc. to see a football team for a season is idiotic. What's your point?

I disagree with that. I believe college football is the greatest game experience ever in the wide wide world of sports. I will also admit that I have a condition known as tinnitus. Maybe that's the real reason I don't care for the damn things.

If you don't ring them when we are on defense then it is just another thing to have to carry around. If I bring a cowbell to the game, it is to make more noise for the other team to have to deal with. The ring responsibly **** kills our atmosphere. Whatever.

Fans yelling would be louder than cowbells, especially if you use your hands like a megaphone. Besides, you've got about 25 seconds to ring before the teams become set. Don't really see what's killing the atmosphere about that.

I've never

in my life owned one, let alone brought one to a game. I just always looked at it as another thing to have to keep up. I'm doing good to keep up with myself at games. I guess if others enjoy it, let 'em have at it. It's just not my thing, though.

Fans yelling and ringing would be even louder...I know the old guys are way more into the actual tradition, but I'm way more into making raquet for our opponents. If that bell doesn't make raquet at opportune times for msu, I'm not going to bring it to the game. I've had people ***** at me about it at games, so I just stopped bringing a cowbell all together. Who gives a damn about ringing a cowbell during a timeout? Although, I guess it would be better than listening to those damn adds they play during timeouts.

Did anyone see the Bama player with earplugs in. Blackledge said he had asked coaches to give him some cause he couldn't concentrate.

I think the forum should have a rule that whenever the pic of cam with the cowbell is posted there should also be a trigger warning attached to it. I'll be lucky to get out of bed in the morning

You understand what you hear on ESPN is a mix of what they want you to hear, and not necessarily representative of what the stadium actually sounds like?

Good lord this is a problem with our fanbase. People like YOU deserve looks of disgust and disdain. Agree with bonedaddy 100%.
