I've got a peaceful, easy feeling...

...and I think you all should too. Here's why.

I realize and acknowledge everything that's on the table. We've got a very good recruiting class hanging in the balance, and the chances of seeing that class intact in February decreases for every day we don't have a coach. I realize that prospective Plans A, B, C, and D at the very least don't seem all that interested, just based on published reports. My own favorite candidate quelled any hope of a quick hire this morning, and I too nervously await an announcement.

However, two things make me feel at ease: #1) Mark Keenum and Greg Byrne have already begun providing leadership that our University has not seen at least since the days of Dr. Z, and it might possibly exceed that. Keenum will be here for a long time, and Byrne has already proven himself. We are finally in hands that will see to it that the best happens for Mississippi State, both in athletics and beyond. #2) We just can't do much worse than what we had. I don't have the sinking feeling that I'm sure some reasonable OM fans had in 2004 or some reasonable Auburn fans have now: "We just fired a coach that won a lot of games for us. Can we get somebody better?" That does not apply to our situation. We just fired a coach who was given ample opportunity to do something and could not do it. He was not handicapped by unreasonable demands. He ran it the way he wanted to run it and failed miserably. We just can't do much worse, and whether we hire Petersen, Kelly, Patterson, Tuberville, Graham, Wilson, Venables, Holtz, Dooley, Bower, or some unknown name, we will likely be in better shape at the end of that day.

The leadership at MSU right now is young with fires in their bellies. We are in a different era of Mississippi State University. That makes the Tubs hiring even less probable because GB probably wants his entire staff on the same page and Tubs just does not fit the mold right now.

...because I think part of the leadership changing is that Byrne will hire the best coach out there and not use excuses. If that's Tuberville, so be it. That's why I feel good about it. At the end of the day, we won't walk away feeling like we did this thing half assed, or that we were looking for the cheap way out.

makes it more and more obvious that GB is putting a lot of thought into this process. I just don't see Tubs fitting into his vision right now. Right now you got Stans as kind of the dean of State coaches. Stans is still relatively young and energetic and ALL about Mississippi State. Then you got Cohen who is young and energetic and ALL about Mississippi State. I just don't see GB hiring Tubs who is getting along in years and does not give a CRAP about Mississippi State. GB has got to be going after somebody who fits into his vision.

GB has a lot of Jack to make it so.

The longer it goes on, the more I'm concerned about an Ed Orgeron type hire.

Especially since at the moment we have no coach.... So ANY coach will be an upgrade.

I also trust Byrne to make a good decision here... I feel much more at ease about this that if LT was still ruling the roost.

...we just got rid of an Ed Orgeron type hire, so the worst we can do is hire another. It's not like we are Auburn and have a serious, serious chance of downgrading.

A peaceful easy feeling would not be the way I describe my feeling about another bad hire. Besides last year, it's been a long time since I've enjoyed a college football season. It's getting to the point where I can't watch it anymore knowing our situation.</p>

You don't even know who Byrne is going to hire and you're already saying he'll make a bad hire! I can't guarantee he'll make a good hire, but name me one bad step he's made in his short career as our AD.
