Most of this will be Germans but I've got to say it anyway.

The announcers must have only gone over 5 things to say in their pre-show meetings since all they could talk about was
1.UCLA will make you pay for your mistakes
2. Renfroe is a 5 tool player
3. Rea is 6'5" 272 pounds
4. UCLA like to put pressure on the defense
5. Renfroe and Rae were both holding the bat too tight and slowing down their swing

I also personally think that after the game the announcers went into the UCLA locker room and gave each one of them their choice of a hand job or hummer.

While UCLA is good, make no mistake, we hit their ace hard enough to score more than one run, but the combination of hitting balls right at their guys and them making top 10 defensive plays all night we had nothing to show for it. Their offense is as bad as advertised. Two unearned runs and a run on a guy we struck out (I think that is the dumbest rule in baseball - even when it benefits us. The guy struck out. He should have to go back to the dugout I don't care if the ball ends up in the stands).

For the superstitious among us can we say imissplatinumplus needs to share some blame?** Before every game this postseason he had a post featuring fans of the opposing school. I think after the ESPN camera work we were all looking forward to a Buin themed post. But alas, it never came.

Now, to borrow from the Head to Head start - Graveman needs to go out there tonight and shut them down...because he can.

You forgot a few

6. UCLA likes to pitch high in the zone
7. UCLA only scored 8 runs in the first 3 games
8. Plutko likes to throw strikes.

9. Mississippi is poor but our fans came even though we can't afford to pay for it. ( why people aren't more upset over that garbage I don't know)

That's some ******** right there. I didn't hear it, but there's a thread about it on NAFOOM. Low rent. What an idiot announcer. Even the poorest state has people who can afford to freaking drive to Nebraska for a couple days. With ESPN, that should be a comment that gets you an unrequested vacation for a few days. Not as bad as what Tony Kornheiser or others have said.

Count me in.....horribly ridiculous comment

Any Bear fan, any USM fan and especially any MSU fan I would assume would be offended by this. What a cheap, below the belt shot to take at a state that has LITERALLY filled up that ballpark. Classy**

I love when Renfroe was hit by the pitch... "Good thing he's a five-tool player."

What the **** does that mean?

I like how they assumed that all of the fans are driving FROM Mississippi too. Apparently the United States should apply Mississippi's border security to Mexico since state grads and/or lifelong fans aren't able to get out of the state. We have pretty decent fan contingencies in all of the south's metro areas. Not Bama or Texas-like of course, but we certainly have plenty.

"Sam Frost is a better defender than a hitter" He's obviously never seen him try to throw from 3rd to 1st.

Even if Cohen said it, it was stupid to say it on the air - period. Where was this guys brain? Every announcer makes idiotic comments from time to time, most are not insulting, and those could be overlooked but gee this was just insulting. If Cohen said that to the team was Patrick in attendance, if not then Cohen should have not repeated it to the media.

If you actually listened Patrick said Cohen told the team the fans had made sacrifices to attend these games. He didn't say our fanbase is poor im glad they dumped money out of the piggybank to get here

Too poor to be in Omaha

I, for one, was most offended by this remark. If Paula Deen has to answer for her bad judgements, so should ESPN.

I'm hearing the bear boards are lit up about the "poor state fans" sh*t. They could afford to get here with no problem... after all --- they've had fifty years to save because THEY'VE NEVER MADE IT THIS FAR!

Frost is one of 5 players who is batting over .300 on the team.

UCLA was playing him way too deep on his one blooping hit.

Frost is also the only player on the team that has a fielding percentage under .900, at .888.

Our best offensive lineup has Frost in the lineup at 2nd, Pirtle at shortstop, and Frazier at 3rd. Detz in leftfield, Bradford at center, Renfroe in right field, and Porter at DH. It would also put Slauter behind the plate. But, we don't play our best offensive lineup. Defense is important.

Yes, Patrick (and maybe Cohen) was profiling and stereotyping Mississippians, but it seems that almost everybody nowadays is hypersensitive to anything and everything people say, whether by mistake or not. And it includes things like this, gender issues, and racial issues. People of all types need to chill out and realize that others are going to let things slip occasionally. I'll let Patrick go on this one.

********, he should be made to answer for his over the air comment. If I were there I would make sure I booed his *** to no end. It's not the professional thing to do over the air no matter who you thought you were repeating. He's an idiot and so are you for taking up for him.

Well, let's see if he addresses the issue tonight. Maybe you could email ESPN and express your dissatisfaction with him.

OK, let me clarify what I said about giving Patrick a pass. If he said it on his own, then yes he deserves the criticism and probably shouldn't be on ESPN (like others have been fired or whatever for certain comments ... this one is just as bad). If Cohen told his players in an attempt to fire them up that lots of fans have made sacrifices to come see them play (a benign comment in itself ... it's no doubt true), and if Patrick was only saying what Cohen had said with attribution to Cohen, then that's OK. If he further gave the impression that Mississippians are a bunch poor folks who had to miss some meals to be there, then he deserves the criticism.

I did not hear his comments last night. Only heard second hand from the board. I don't think we're seeing this any differently. But my comment about hypersensitivity these days still holds.

Most people don't realize that statistically, if you control for the Delta region (take them out of the sample) Mississippi ranks in the 50th percentile (ranks around 25th) among all the states in everything from income to education.
in other words 3/4 of the state lives as well or better than the rest of the country. The delta, however is so illiterate and poor that it drags our ranking down to 49 or 50 in these categories.

Where does Alabama rank? We don't have a Delta, but do have a Black Belt (named for the soil, not the racial makeup). And would that also hold if you remove the Arkansas Delta from their statistics? Just curious.

I read this in an article a few years ago and was so struck by it that I didn't forget it because all I've ever heard my whole life is that Mississipi ranks last in everything which didn't make sense because it seems pretty normal to me compared to the several other states I'd been to. The article did say that the Mississippi delta region was the poorest in the country and much of it in a third world way so it must be worse than the Arkansas delta and the Alabama region you speak of.
All of this to say I don't have the rankings data in front of me and don't currently remember who wrote the article.

That's fine ... just thought you might have read a recent article. My only experience with the Delta is a couple of trips to Tunica, and you can't tell much from that about the general area. My parents were in the Arkansas Delta during the Great Depression, and from their stories it was certainly no Utopia either.

I'm with you RocketDawg. We don't know exactly what Cohen said to the players. It's possible that he said something about fans sacrificing in order to come and support the team-but didn't say anything about them being too poor. Maybe Patrick heard this and embellished the comment a little. We don't really know. I believe that he was trying to compliment the passion of the fans by saying "look they love their team so much..." and he just said a bit too much and negated the compliment with a gross stereotype.

OK, let me clarify what I said about giving Patrick a pass. If he said it on his own, then yes he deserves the criticism and probably shouldn't be on ESPN (like others have been fired or whatever for certain comments ... this one is just as bad).
