.....and I think this is the most INTENTS the buildup to this game has been in that time. I think there are several factors at play here.

One is there have been many matchups over that time where there was a talent disparity. My first few years here as well as the last eight or so, we were on the down side of that. There were several 42-14 type beatdowns in there. In the late 90s/early 2000s, we were better and won four in a row, a couple of them with relative ease. Croom somehow pulled one out of his fat *** three years ago to keep it from being a complete wash. And the 3-2 game lives in infamy as two completely inept teams.

There have also not been many years when both teams were trying to have strong seasons, and an early game like this meant so much. When this game was played in early to mid-October, you sort of knew who you were by then. But this year, each team is looking to establish something. For Auburn, it is the validation that their lofty goals are in fact realistic, and that they could indeed challenge for the West. For State, I think it's more about getting to and beyond the 6-6 mark. With some winnable games down the road, an early win over Auburn would set the Dogs up for a nice season.

Then there's the Cam Newton factor. Enough said.

I think each fan base is also thirsting to prove that their second year head coach was the better hire. I think almost each fan base is unanimous in thinking that theirs was the better choice, as they should. In an of itself tomorrow doesn't settle this one, but it gives one of these coaches a heads up in that argument.

I guess cowbells are in there too. Auburn fans seem to be more vocal than some others about them, but maybe thats just because I live here.

All in all, I think someone is leaving Scott Field (still my preferred name for our facility) with some hurt feelings and a loooooooot of disappointment. Because both fan bases and probably teams and staffs are convinced that they are going to win.

Our coaching staff (at least from what I hear) are convinced they are going to win this game and more importantly, really need to win this game. I dont know that they had a clock running or anything like that, but for several reasons, this game is big for the staff. I dont think there is a moral victory to be had here. The positive I take away, at least for now, is that (a) alot of our fans are talking **** again and (b) opposing teams are actually concerned about us. Both are good things, and both have been absent for 9 or more years.

and it's older than Joe Paterno's rotting scrotum. It should be the preferred nomenclature for our venue.<div>
</div><div>I think you're dead on with this year's matchup. Auburn started last year with more to work with. But as the season went on, we seemed to improve while they did not, save a good showing against Alabama. That's why I feel better about our coaching situation than theirs. That said, you can argue that, once again, Auburn starts the season with more to work with than we do. Whether that's the case or how much better our coaching situation really is will be decided tomorrow night.</div><div>
</div><div>I hope we ring the **** out of our bells. For Shug/Newton and the national audience.</div>

and the Auburn people I have talked to this week have been very cautious about what they say. It is pretty obvious they feel they have a good team, but they sure as hell don't feel good about how they played this past Saturday, especially on defense, and they are all very quick to point out that is their main concern. Cautiously pessimistic is how I would describe the people I've talked to, but there is definitely a buzz here about the game.

fact that both sides feel they are going to win and someone is going to be really hungover Friday. This is the first time in awhile that our fanbase has been on the verge of actually being a bit cocky. Yeah there was that 1 hit wonder under Croom where we won enough to get to play the CUSA champ, but I want to feel "Jackie Sherrill, late 90's, we are going to take your balls and put them in your momma's mouth and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it" kinda cocky. It felt 17-ing good walking into Scott Field EVERY game thinking you were going to win.I want that again. And if we reach that point, I am going to be one hard to live with cocky SOB because this last decade has really sucked.

Everyone seems to be focused on Newton and his return to Starkville, etc. etc. However, has anything come out about how Chris Relf feels about this game? You have to believe. Since he is from Montgomery and it is his first start vs AU. He will be sky high and want this game badly. I hope Relf goes off for 100 yards rushing and another 200 through the air.

I'd take this, too.
