Am I the only one who thinks that this is probably his last year as State's announcer. He no longer wants to drive down to do the weekly call in show which I believe is being handled by Jim Ellis. I kinda think that he will just announce it in the middle of the basketball season and skip most of the retirement fanfare.

As long as there's ample quantities of scotch and he doesn't die, I can't see him not calling the games. But, I do agree that his last days of announcing could be near. I just hope that we get a decent season or two in before he croaks. Lord knows he deserves it more than anyone else.

Terrible is a stretch. The man has a classic voice and identifiable style (in a good way). Plus, it could be worse. Drunk blind sarcastic pissed-off Cristil >>> David Yellum any day.

Cristil's unique and colorful style is one of the few truly great things about MSU sports.

We will lose him someday, and he will be missed. There is no way to replace a performer like him. We'll be going in a more typical, less colorful direction. More exacting. 17'n boring. Take my word for it; it's gonna suck.

There is no reason for him to hang it up unless he can't do it anymore physically. He has no problems getting around and announces the games fine. Sure he messes up names now and might be a little slower than he used to be, but he is who he is. State football would not be the same without him and I think lightning will strike you today for saying that he is terrible. Cristil is unique in the way he announces and I want him to be here forever.

I actually think you are terrible now.

I can't imagine an MSU football game without the voice of Jack Cristil. I know that sadly enough it will happen one day, but I don't want to think about it.

His color and style are outstanding. Always has been.

In football, he frequently fails to describe what happened or describes it incorrectly. Its not just a slip-up of getting names right. I think he has trouble reading numbers and he has trouble following the football.

Now in basketball, he's still sharp as a tack. He's also a hella lot closer to the action. So I really think is problem is eyesight.

Sorry, he's terrible for football. Great guy. Just not so functional for football.

For me, the game is vivid as he describes it. He makes some brief screwups, but when does he "fail to describe what happens or describes it incorrectly." I think you mean "inacccurately, but you must use the correct word for one to be sure.

You're just wrong about this. Move on.

Jack is ok now. He's not as good as he was though. As an impartial listener, it is probably time he hung them up. He gets behind some, and does say the wrong thing occasionally, but if I had grown up with him I'd want him to stay another year or two. That's probably all he has left.

He has another play by play guy in the booth serving as analyst, and the analyst has no real insights into the game other than to describe what just happened in more detail, provide a game recap, or read some stats and scores. Put a real analyst in the booth like Wyatt for football or Power for basketball, and Jack's play by play would get better. I love Ellis for baseball but he comes up short in the color role.

Overtime, 4th down. Conner drops back to pass (long pause, long pause, long pause, cheers in the crowd). Touchdown!

Thanks, Jack. WTF just happened. It was 4th down, Conner couldn't find anybody open, scrambled around and then ran downfield himself into the endzone.

he was probably shocked that we scored. It was a Woody McCorvey/Croom led offense we're talking about here.

I would say for the most part all radio teams suck pretty bad these days. Even if Cristil isn't as sharp as he used to be, at least he sounds cool. He has an old school sound that isn't around anymore. I think the Croom years made his job pretty hard, and if you watched the coach's show it seemed Croom always seemed uncomfortable sitting next to him.

I was asked for 1 example and I gave the most glaring example I could think of - a game-winning overtime play which Cristil gave absolutely no description of until it was over.

I have loved Jack over the years. But his time has come. Let go.

Says the guy whose team is called by Yellum Kellum. No most all radio doesn't suck. I know you guys in Oxford are pretty beat down over Yellum, but come on.

If so, you're a dumbass. Jack gave a pretty good description of the play if you ask me. And also, it wasn't 4th down, it was 3rd down and we were tied 10-10. UAB had the ball first in OT and we intercepted a pass. All we were doing was just setting up for a field goal from 50% Carlson and Conner decided to 17 it, and ran for a touchdown himself.

Have you ever heard LSU's radio team? They are miserable. I have XM radio and have listened to most of them in the SEC. I actually feel like Kellum would rank at worst 7th or 8th in the SEC. He is still pretty rough, but that is my point. Everybody sucks. Vanderbilt's radio crew is horrible, so are a couple others.

Conner gains 15 yards, 5 yards from winning the football game, before Cristil lets you know he passed the line of scrimmage. Not good. I stand by my opinion.

Got any other examples?

Like everyone else, I grew up listening to Jack. Jack's voice and MSU football are synonymous. However, he just doesn't call the game very well anymore. He misses to much information. Examples? I cite the two biggest plays of 2007. AJ's 106 yard pick 6. DP's 75 yard punt return for a TD. The call by the TV guys was much better than Jack's call. Hell, on the AJ play, Jack has a few seconds of dead air. You are talking one of the most exciting plays in MSU history.

Let Jack leave the booth on his own terms. However, move him to a commentator position. The play by play duties needs to go to someone who can see the play and call it.

I hope he goes away gracefully. Seeing Jack do color would be like Montana to the chiefs or Montana holding a clip board.

and funny dejecting statements about a losing team that keeps me listening to a slaughter of said team and I'll consider getting on your bandwagon. Since you're so research prone and feel we can do so much better.
