Over on the lake, Geno has an interview with Jackie up. Now, when Jackie left, it was past time for him to go, but I will always have a soft spot for him. To wit:

Gene: Would your advice to the MSU fans be to be patient with Dan while he builds his program?

"They don't need patience. They've lived through some hard times and they are excited. And they will do whatever it takes to help. It's going to be exciting."

So, yeah, it may not be doing it the right way, but even Jackie thinks we're entitled to expect winning football early on.

have forgiven Sherrill and realized if you take out 2001-2003, he did a lot of good. Unfortunately, you can't take out those years.

If people are willing to forgive Polk for straight up showing his *** when Raffo didn't get the job, then they need to forgive Jackie.

I'll never forgive Polk for pulling that ****. And I'll never forgive Sherrill for leaving our football program under the outhouse either. But I'll always love Jackie for what he did for us his first 10 years. The big difference between the two is that I'd much rather Polk never come within 1,000 miles of Starkville again (at least not until he publicly apologizes for his behavior), while I think Jackie should be welcome back anytime he wants to come back.

If Jackie would have "retired" after the 2002 season, he would have got zero flack. He thought he had one more year in him. When it was apparant that he didn't, he stepped down mid-season. I respect that.

Polk could have retired an uber-legend if he would have hung it up after the CWS run. He would have been able to name Raffo the coach that day. I am so glad that old bastard was stubborn enough to go one more year or we'd be stuck with Raffo right now.

.....far too patient? That's not to say I expect Mullen to produce a world beater his first season, but our attitude shouldn't be as if he needs 4 years to "rebuild" something. I'm sick of that notion in our fan base, that every time we hire a new coach we must give him some ridiculous amount of time to prove he can win. If Mullen hasn't proven it by his 2nd and 3rd year, then it ain't happening.

He loves MSU more than y'all will ever know. He truly cares about the program's success and will be one of Coach Mullen's biggest fans.

in the first place. I blame LT for that. Rule #1 of hiring coaches- never hire back a "legend". If his last year had been 1997, also a CWS run, he would still be revered. I was extremely upset when we brought Polk back, and I completely turned on LT when I found out that Polk demanded that he get "his job back" and allowed it to happen. We had a chance to hire Paul Manieri, who would have been an upgrade over McMahon and would have left our program in great shape for when LSU hired him away and then we could have gone ahead and gotten Cohen at that point.

For the record, I also blame LT for keeping Sherrill around too long. Jackie is a competitor. He is going to keep trying until someone stops him. Unfortunately, we had reached a point where there was nothing more that he could do, but instead of pulling the plug, we gave him one more shot and came out with an awesome 2-10 season, which put us in an even deeper hole.

It was either that or Mr. Sherrill so I chose the to go the "coach" route. He is just extremely old school in the respect for your elders department. But my father is the exact same way so it wasn't foreign to me at all when I first met coach.
As far as a relationship with Croom is concerned, I don't think it is much of a mystery at all. He hasn't come but to about three or four games since he left State. The constant comments by Croom about how bad of shape the program was in when he arrived really pissed him off so he just chose to not participate.

When I heard, I just hung my head and said, "Oh, ****. I hope I'm wrong about how this will turn out." Little did I know just how bad it would end. The second biggest mistake was when he un-retired back in 1993 or so.

Being from Texas and when he was at A&M was good times as well. He owned UT, and to this day UT fans despise him.

I also enjoyed the many golf lessons from him. Especially the wedge lessons in the Shira when it was freezing out and we would hit balls in there. He would be strolling around the Shira, see that we were practicing in there, come down and grab a club out of one of our bags and start hitting wedges with us. Then he would go down the line and start giving us lessons.

He wasnt to pumped when he saw 55 Titleist impaled into the insulation of the roof from us hitting rocket shot 8 irons when no one was around. But you could tell he didnt give a ****.

Or the night he saw a couple of us in the grocery store with 10 cases of beer and said "Golfers, doing what they do best"

It was a Sunday afternoon and there were very few people on the small jet. Coach Sherrill is in sports nutrition now and handed out some type of energy/sports bars to the people around him. I've met him several times over the years but this was the first time I had the chance to speak with him in depth. He is easy to talk to and a really nice guy. He showed me the "12th Man" book from his days at Texas A & M. He said he had the first two chapters written in The Book. The last chapter alone will be worth the price.

but in the throws of his late 90's success, one of his daughters ended up visiting a church I attended. She was introduced as Jackie's daughter, I said nothing and gave her a bear hug. So basically I may have gotten to second base with your babies' mama....at a church.

Seriously, nicely done. Unless you're really Derrick. And then aGAIN I say, nicely done.

please tell ask her politely to not sing at public events ever again. She's more than welcome to destroy songs in a karaoke bar, however.
