Last year my son got real sick over the week end. I go to church with my doctor and I called him at home. He recommended the children emergency room at UMC. He said that it is the best in the four states that surround Miss. He said that it was one of the best in the country. We carried him there. We saw a doctor with in 20 minutes of arriving. He was seen by a intern but the staff doctor check behind the intern. We were very please with the care. I was a littleconcern because it was a public hospital but I was wrong. The price was unbelievable. Before any insurance was paid the cost was only 185.00 or so for the emergency room and 75.00 for the doctor. Micheal Moore can kiss my ***.

...and your state of health. If you are over 40, maybe 45, I'd suggest you find a well respected Internist (Internal Medicine Specialist), if you are younger, I'd recommend a Family Practitioner. In either case find a "board certified" physician. Internal Medicine physicians usually have a clientele of either older patients or patients with chronic medical conditions. They, like Family Physicians, are primary care providers. If you are young and in good health, I suggest you might find a Family Nurse Practitioner, which is a midlevel provider usually under the general supervision of a physician. Nurse Practitioners are usually very thorough and spend a lot of time on wellness issues.

...to MEA because a family friend doc was involved in it and it's now part of St. Dominic. As Todd and others have said, UMC does a great job. Other than that, I go to a specialist associated with Wesley in Hattiesburg for an annual cancer prevention checkup. That doc in question is associated with friends who are partners inthat clinic.

I've had a couple off non-routine issues and I can say he takes the time to figure out things, think, and solve the problem.

They'vemade a strong effort in the last couple of years to become one of the nations top hospitals. They recently have hired most of the cardiologist away from Bapist and now are a certified Chest Pain Center. The have a seperate portion of the ER that is dedicated just to ruling out heart attacks and will perform a cardiac stress test in the morning. They are opening a brand new Peds ER in the near future and the adult ER is being redone at the time as well. St D's and Baptist may look nicer, but the research and medicine is far more advance at UMC. And for those not wanting to support Ole Miss, a larger majority there are MSU grads vs Bear grads. UMC is also the only level one trauma center in the state. St. D's and Baptist actually pay money not to get the bad trauma. They go to us at UMC.

For a check up, you need a family doc or an internist. Call 815-2005 during the daytime and ask for an appointment. </p>

Is this physician board certified (mentioned above)?
Do you have someone on call at night and on weekends to answer urgent calls?
Do you see your own patients in the hospital should I need to be admitted?
How for out are you having to schedule appointments? How long does it take to see me if I walk in now?
How many patients do you see per day? (Shy away from anyone regularly seeing over 30 per day if you plan to actually get them to listen and devote thought to you.)

Again.... Why are we discussing this here?

I've also had a good experience there with another doctor (I can't remember her name). I showed up 10 before closing on a Saturday last year, and the doctor took her time to figure out what was wrong, etc. instead of pushing me out the door with a broad spectrum antibiotic.

concerned.

They're building an entire new area for electrophysiology and are still upgrading the Heart Station. They have stolen some of the best Cardiologists, Interventionalists, and Electrophysiologists in Jackson from Baptist and St D. They have 4 top notch CT surgeons (Aru, Merrill, Tribble, Creswell).

They have made huge strides in every facet of the hospital, but Cardiology is one area in which they have really put an emphasis.

I like it, personally, because you always have someone on site to take care of you in case of emergency...not to mention that you will have about 5 or 6 different doctors evaluating you each day as your PCP instead of one doctor.

As for an internist, I'd recommend Dr. Shephard if you are going with UMC, or as previously mentioned, Dr. Hellrung at MEA. He is an awesome doctor.

He's a state guy and good doctor. His dad was MSU football hall of famer.

Massie Headley MD is also solid doctor. (He's a reb, but don't hold that against him)

they would not rank above Ark Childrens or UAB. Anyone telling you otherwise is a little misinformed. The Peds department at UMC is fantastic and there are some really great doctors but not the best in a 4 state area. This is the one thing that has been discussed on this board that I know that I am correct on.

UMC has made some HUGE strides in Cardio the past 2-3 years. As has already been mention, they have pulled some of the top heart doctors out of private practice and have invested heavily in the Cardio arena.

Sounds like the OP is looking for a normal doctor and I would suggest a Internal Med doctor. I would suggest going ahead and getting in with a group that has a good reputation and covers a hospital that you would be checking into if you had a problem. Most of their patients are older but if you were to have a problem, it is always nice to have the doctor that has been seeing you be the one that rounds and treats you if you were to require hospitalization.

His father was the star running back on our 1941 team, his name was Blondie Black. Doc Bruce is obviously, a HUGE state fan.

If you don't want to go to Madison, go to Dr Castle (same office as Massie Headley - Baptist Northtown Clinic on Old Canton Road). Dr Castle is also a huge State guy

just waiting to see howsomeonecould fita CJ, Stansuxbury, C34, Ms Newton's Baby Daddy, Ravern, Raven, Bailey, Hawaiian Punch, Nutt, LT, Polk, Jimmie, etc., reference into this actually meaningful, useful, and honorable thread.

And a second on Bruce Black referenced below--personal and professional opinion--I'd go to him if I lived in Jackson.
