I got up 49 maybe 10 times a year. And as far as I can remember, there has been mother17ing construction from Florence to the interstate. What the 17 is going on? Do all of Mississippi’s roads suck because all of our funds are being spend on barrels for this area? At this point I think it’s all for decoration and it will never change. I 17ing hate this drive

Another problem making the already maddening process of highway construction both slower and more expensive is the ever increasing safety standards. For that you can blame 3 main culprits; dumb engineering, bad/stupid drivers, and distracted drivers. Some of the new standards are absolutely ridiculous. Where does it end? I could bore y'all all day with that ****.

I'm constantly bitching; you cannot and should not engineer for stupidity. With liability concerns ever increasing, my battle is a losing one.

For the time and money they have spent to widen a highway that has 9 stop lights between The Fish house igloo and I20, they could have paid to build an elevated highway with frontage road exits/enters, or a complete by-pass around Florence/Richland.

It's almost as though highway builders bribe politicians with huge campaign donations, which in turn lead to never-ending highway construction.

Almost.*

It's bad. I avoid 49 between Richland and Florence as much as possible. And when I've had to take US 49 south at Richland, I've turned off at the beginning of the construction and gone down old 49 all the way down to Florence.

Edit to add: Yeah, it's definitely slower to go down old 49 but no headaches which I like.

There was a cause way purpose but did not get taken up that would run from Brandon to the coast with limited exits and higher speed limits.

Black Helicopters baby. Got to blame that big boogeyman (though no one seems to figure out who he is).

I guess it's too boring to say it's a heavily traveled road and difficult construction to undertake. Nawwww

Sounds like that Trans-Texas Corridor that got shelved. Environmentalist libs got it stopped, and weirdly enough they are the ones bitching about traffic.

i would like to see Mississippi take the option of the toll road a lot more. it really has helped states like Florida and texas build some nice roads all over the state with less traffic; however, those states also have a much larger and wealthier tax bases to help pay for roads and projects like that anyway.

I live below Florence and have to commute on 49 everyday and have for over twenty five years. The problem with 6 laning it is by the time they’re finished in ‘23 it will be outdated. Should have been done twenty five years ago. Mississippi is so poor that from start to finish it’s going to be a five year project.

I don't think they ever have more than 3 or 4 employees working on it at any given time. If that. Most every time I ride down that way I don't see a damn soul working and most of the dirt they've moved looks undisturbed for quite some time, with giant weeds growing out of it. They're definitely slow walking it.

Frankly, I enjoy the drive. The constant glow of caution barrels and rocks hitting my windshield is soothing when I'm transporting illegal firearms.

Yeah, Mississippi tends to give contractors way too long to complete a project with too low liquidated damages. I've seen several cases where a contractor just completely left an ongoing job for months or even a year or more to work other jobs knowing they can always come back to that one later.

In 2005 my wife's parents lost their home to the State. The State was going to extend either High Street or Pearl Street from Down town to the air port. It was going to be a toll road. In Miss the law says in order to have a toll road there must be at least two other road running parallel to the toll road. They had that with HWy 25 and I-20. They never built the road but three families had to move due to losing homes to the state. Those lots are empty today.

Jackson is probably the worst city in the State. Crime in the city, Rednecks in Rankin, and xanax wine drunk Reunion housewives in Madison. Yuck.

In the 2018 special session and the 2019 session, the legislature designated $3.8 million for construction of the "Florence-Byram Parkway" which is now being designed and right of way is being acquired. It is one of the legs of what will eventually become a south loop from Clinton to Brandon. But it will never happen, I guess.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but one of the primary reasons 49 stalled is due to mother17n utilities not getting their 17n **** out of the way.

do you know what stopped the project? funding, environmental, politics? i'm sure they ran into a lot of environmental issues going through there considering the swamp/wetlands that sit at the location

i had heard rumors about that. Do you think the whole project will ever be completed? I remember years ago, alabama had planned a moffit road hwy 98 bypass but it ended up getting shut down for environmental and funding reasons. it would be nice if the State could make it come to fruition in our lifetime.

I had a little actual knowledge of that project, but it's been a long time. I do remember there were definitely some environmental issues. And, as I recall, the original idea for the project came at at time when traffic at the airport was rising, then after 9/11, that came to an end. I think the project hung around for several years, then just died from neglect and lack of any real interest.

Interesting. You can still see the spur at High Street on the river. Fortification too.

You guys in Jackson should be happy. At least your road project isn't on its 41st year and still not close to done. Hwy 19 to Philadelphia and 15 from philly to Louisville may never get done. That **** has completely killed ever getting industry back into east central Mississippi. It is rough watching 1/8 of the state die because of no 4 lanes.

About a year or 2 ago they said it was a 5-year project. I actually know who got the contract and it's an insanely huge job where they are redoing the highway from scratch. They're using an almost $1M concrete crusher to turn the existing highway to gravel and they are rebuilding the road bed and repaving. I guess it was falling apart. It absolutely sucks but I'm hoping it's a huge improvement when they are done because that stretch has always sucked including pre-construction.

my dad was an engineer at MDOT for longer than I would like to tell you. Rest assured, the level of graft going on at the highway department is beyond criminal.

Anytime you have a an old concrete roadway that's been paved over in asphalt it's appealingly cost effective to simply mill and repave it again, until eventually somebody has to pulverize that **** and start over.

There's some debate about whether to pulverize and use it as base vs. removing the slabs in sections. GA did this (full reclamation) on I-16 and holy 17 it was a mess. The pulverizing/compacting/paving method works for the FAA, they've had good results with it, when done correctly. And by correctly, I mean using equipment that won't destroy underground structures and utilities.

Are you talking about pulverizing concrete and repaving over it? Because that isn't happening that much. Asphalt roads are being pulverized and mixed with cement/lime, and paved over (even though you really need a crack retardant layer), but I haven't seen much concrete.
