Doubt it will happen, but would be great for the City if it did. Especially by giving more growing room for UMC. If they are planning on hosting "non related" events like concerts, etc...does that mean alcohol would be served?

Now we're going to have to worry about croots flipping to JSU*

They are in control of Memorial Stadium...

...and the state & UMC really want the stadium land for UMC expansion, so it's in Jackson State's interest to ask for as much as they can. We'll see what happens.

Agreed. And my best guess answer to your question would be that it's possible that the land/facility would not be owned by the state but by a private foundation so that alcohol could be served.

Well that makes sense. Please, please, please no one go on a political diatribe after what I'm about to ask. I keep reading how MS finances are in the toilet. How in the world do they plan on paying for a Dome?

My understanding is that JSU wants...

$75 million from the state but what I don't know is that for transferring the stadium property to the state/UMC or is there going to be a fee for that in addition to the $75 million. There's talk of selling naming rights but I've not read anything specific.

Well if its like most things Jackson State they want $200 million so they can actually spend twenty mill on stadium and embezzle and misappropriate the other $180 million. When their director of landscaping is driving a Rolls something is fishy as 17.

a thread like this...........

never ends well. Not when there are rabbiddawgs posting. Not blaming you for what will likely happen, just making an observation.

They already have a 75M bond approved.

If they sell the land to UMC that the Stadium is on they'll get a few more Million. They'd just need to find a way to raise the other 100Million. My guess is they end up with a stadium that costs a little over 100Million. But they want this to serve as more of a general venue for concerts and stuff as well. Sort of pie in the sky but not really either. Something will happen, and pretty soon.

I held off because I figured there'd be such an observation...

...I thought about posting this a few days ago when the newspaper blogs mentioned the private talks. Since it's public now, I figure why not post it & the Governor is on record as stating that Jackson State would have to receive state funding for a new stadium. I don't think Jackson State will get what they've originally asked for-- this is the opening stages of public negotiations-- and JSU has some cards since they have land that the state and UMC wants. Obviously, they can't (and I don't see them) overplay this bid because Jackson State also wants an on-campus stadium. It's a matter of seeing how reasonable people will be.

Nice to wish for I suppose. Jackson is smaller than Huntsville, and I can't imagine a domed stadium being built here, especially for a small college. And what would the taxpayers in other cities think about their tax dollars going to entertainment in Jackson? Probably not very much, just as we in Alabama don't want to use state funds for a dome in Birmingham. If they want one, let them pay for it. Most likely folks have the same attitude in Mississippi.

I think this would be great. Jackson State could play their home games there but it would also attract other acts to the Jackson area. It's Ludacris that our state capitol if still holding on to that ******** of a stadium and that ******* dump of a coliseum.

If this happens. (which it won't) I would expect for State, UM and Southern to play one home game a year there. They coud also set it up to host basketball events (like the superdome did), hockey and trade shows. It would be a perfect jumpstart for Jackson and would greatly benefit the entire state. Just hope Jackson State does not screw it up.

And you better believe that JSU is going to charge a ton of money for the events that go on.

Who actually owns the land the coliseum is on?

I thought Jsu was just leasing the stadium. I didn't think they owned the land. Does the state own it

Mississippi just approved $80 mil for MSU's stadium. Turning VMS over to JSU is now a liability. Can't show favoritism.

While I think it is a stupid *** request, it might actually cause some good if they change the stupid *** flag.

I'm very surprised that a new arena hasn't been built in Pearl or another area..

also it would make since if JSU built an on campus stadium similar to Tulane's in NO. No reason to spend that kind of money on a dome in Jackson.

I would think a 30,000 seat facility would be better. Attendance at J-State games has been going down the past 10-15 years, and they should build something on campus that would be more realistic, as well as some place where they could put all the big basketball games.

I don`t see how they can build a 50,000 seat dome stadium with all the infrastructure, parking etc needed for $200 mil. Somebody is really going to have to cut some corners somewhere. I thinking somebody is blowing smoke up some officials`s asses. OR maybe some officials are blowing smoke up taxpayer asses.
