Jackson takes another hit

They put police all over the place during the holiday season. I'm not saying Jackson is a super safe place, but that area where Highland Village is located is not any less safe than anywhere else in the city. Nor is it really any less safe than areas in other major cities. Is it less safe than Madison? Sure.
Not really. It's all about $$.
If you can't afford to live in Jackson and send your kids to Prep, JA & St. Andrews, then you probably won't be buying your groceries at Whole Foods.. Madison has Kroger and Wal-Mart for that.

The reason Jackson isn`t safe isn`t so much the police as it is the courts IMO. Practically all crimes in Jackson are committed by repeat offenders with looong rap sheets.
Need is a poor excuse if that's what is being used. Millsaps and Belhaven are four blocks apart. Sam Hall has a nice blog about it.
We saw Blue Man Group Sunday afternoon. Different, but very entertaining. Great band and drummers, huh?

I think Huntsville/Madison County has 12 and they're all well supported ... and plans to build at least one more. And they're also building grocery-only Wal Marts soon. And there are others in Decatur and Athens too. You'd think that Jackson would really support Wal Mart. There's only one KMart left here, but several Target stores.

But aren't Millsaps and Belhaven both private schools? They're under the control of no government entity (except for accreditation) , while the State controls state-owned colleges.
The WalMart on 18 is the only one in Jackson proper. I heard that they had $1 million in losses and writeoffs every year- merchandise either lost via shoplifting, or employees slipping stuff out the back.
Walmart has a couple of strategies...
Often the leave it intentionally on purpose to ensure no competitor can move in. Also often they will sell their building as soon as its built and rent it back from whatever development company runs the strip center. This way when the build the bigger super center 10 miles down the road they can up and move freely. Smart but bastardly too. Which is why towns like Starkville have more than 1 empty Walmart.

I find it a little difficult to fathom that $2740 worth of stuff just waltzes..

I worked in a wal-mart warehouse and three pallets of cigars disappeared in 4 months time. $30,000.00 each. You would be surprised what comes up missing. The pallets were not small either.

I wouldn't say crime is an issue, but, like most everywhere in Jackson, crime will occur.

Only drawback will be parking, but they're going to tear down Paul Anthony's and redo the way the lot is drawn out, although there is no way this will alleviate what is sure to be a congested parking lot.

How does Jackson manage to get a Whole Foods and Huntsville doesn't? Whole Foods made a statement a few years ago that they were going to open a store in Huntsville then they back out of it.
We've certainly got more of the high income type of people in a more concentrated area than Jackson does and it would draw people from Decatur, Madison and Athens as well (just like Costco does).

It is running at a large deficit and the city is looking to refinance bonds. The refi would lower payments now, but not change the date the bonds are due - which is kicking the can down the road, only the can get bigger later.

Maybe the convention center should have been next to the King Edward? That convention center could have been close to both the King Edward and the Amtrak station. And the upcoming Iron Horse Grill. And a block and a half from the Farrish Street restoration that is forever getting started. Is this so hard? What the #*($& Jackson!

You are correct, there needed to be a hotel connected to the convention center.
Jackson officials really dropped the ball there and on other projects(see the Farish Street money pit).
The Jackson Convention Center is not booked all the time b/c they are over-priced vs other cities.
It's better to charge a little less, and stay booked, then to charge more and be empty half the time..
They are really proud of it..

Large companies, over 1000 employees will only do conventions where they have connected hotel rooms. I just asked the lady that plans ours about doing more locations. She said it takes nearly 200k convention space and around 1500 hotel rooms for company folks and vendors.
I'm sure the fat @$$ Keneth Stokes and his Kentucky Derby hat wearing wife...
