The fan base seems really energized this year. Heyward is partly it, but with Bobby leaving, and us having really good depth all around except maybe 1st base, we have alot to look forward to. And a good shot to the Phillies too. They come out and think they make a statement and score 11 runs. We come out and score 14 and are still batting. Gonna be a fun NL East race this year. </p>

As for Glaus, I'm not sure he's the answer at first, but I have a feeling that the ownership will be willing to spend the money (for a change) to fill that spot with a big bat in July if needed. I would think they want to send Cox out in style and would be more prone to spend a little extra to get the squad over the hump if they are one bat away at the break.

Glaus is a shell of what he used to be, and I don't like playing converted infielders at 1st base.Glaus' bat looked slow today, especially in that first at bat where Zambrano challenged him with 3 straight fastballs and he never touched one of them. I think the lineup is good enough to put another rookie in there. Yunel, McCann, Chipper, Prado, and Heyward should hit well with regular consistency. Not sold on Melky or McLouth, but I think we have enough in the lineup to give Freeman a shot and let him work through some rookie jitters, if he even has any. I think Glaus will be a defensive and offensive liability at 1st.

Glaus could turn out to be decent. he looked great defensively today. he's shown good contact, but little power, particularly troubling given he's coming off a shoulder injury. Hinske has looked great too, and could see alot of time at first if Glaus struggles. Freeman has time to prove himself in AAA, and if he looks good he may get called up in June if Glaus and Hinske struggle. If all three blow this year, then maybe a trade, but for who? i don't see a Fred McGriff-type FA-to-be that could be gotten reasonably (which rules out Adrian Gonzolez).

IMO, it's GM malpractice that they passed on LaRoche and signed Glaus for not that much less, all after avoiding Adam Dunn like the plague last year. The reasons for passing on Dunn was that his defense was suspect (so they signed a guy who's never played 1b?). They passed on LaRoche........hell i don't even know why. maybe because he's slow to start in the 1st half of the season (so they signed a guy coming off an injury)? LaRoche would have been slightly overpaid, but with Freeman ready to go next year, a one year arb deal on him would have been perfect.

The truth of the matter is that when given a choice between player A and player B, they would have signed a no-armed midget over a reincarnated and in his prime Babe Ruth as long as the former's cost was $3M while the latter's was $8M. it's all about cash flow and stock price (same reason Heyward was called up early.) it's very typical of what's happened in business in this country, thanks to the over-incentivization of stock.

Junior "launches".

Heyward got a decent home run, good for him.

Been a rough 102 years, hasn't it?

If not, then you are just a dumbass. He hit that ball 1/2 way back in the bullpen. Way over 400 ft.

Can't count the home run derby show Sosa put on, but Heyward hitting that to the back of the bullpen is one of the longest. There aren't many tape measure shots at Turner Field. You just don't see a ton of balls crushed there.

that the Braves didn't go after Laroche any harder. No clue what he eventually signed at/for, but when the Braves moved on, he was looking for (and probably deserved) a multi-year deal. They obviously want 1B to be Freeman's to lose by the beginning of next season, so they were looking for a one-year deal. That seemed to be a good move on Wren's part, not a screwup. I do think Glaus is the key to this season offensively. I could easily see Hinske and Prado filling in regularly if necessary, but they aren't 25 HR/year guys like Glaus has the potential to be, even if he bats .250.

Best case scenario I can see for the Braves would be for Jordan Schafer to get his stuff together and claim the CF and leadoff spot long-term.

That ball was absolutely hammered. But, by all means, continue to blame your teams' suckiness on a goat.
