Sounds to me like he's also trying to make it a race thing lmao.

Mentioned he thought they would get treated like the Shephards but it's different when you don't fit. I guess he didn't see the difference in how Reed played vs Jasper. I also guess he didn't see the backlash Reed got for sporting Arkansas gear. What a complete idiot.
You're the one doing that. Very interesting indeed.

Jasper was also playing out of position all season. He is a shooting guard not a point guard. Part of that was due to injuries but Pope didn't seem to do him any favors with the substitutions. He and Malachai played well off each other but they stopped being on the court together. I am just sad that a family of die hard UK fans, including two of our best football players, have such a bad taste in their mouths because our fans run their mouths off at players and their families - esp. ones we know care about the program. How many Khalil Whitney situations are we going to have where we find out in hindsight more was going on at the time and we have to look back and realize we were making the situation worse by trying to make ourselves feel better about the outcome of a game.

MillionS. Also, "reportedly."
Splitting hairs, ridiculously I might add. And yes reportedly because NIL isn't public. I can't cite a source that doesn't exist. But that would be in line for what a lot of other players of his ranking have gotten here before and other colleges.

The excuses for poor performance are really, really starting to piss me off.

I think Jasper will pan out, just needs to get in the weight room
I don’t get these takes that act like his only problem was “the weight room”. Did you not watch him play this year? The flaws in his game go WAY beyond just lack of strength. He can’t dribble the ball against pressure without turning it over, he has awful court vision (he either doesn’t see or simply ignores open teammates) and is an awful decision-maker.

Those aren’t issues that “the weight room” magically fixes.

Jasper simply felt too much pressure from those around him. Didn't Jelavic make a somewhat caustic comment that most thought was aimed at JJ when he got in a game. It seemed to be the same every time he got on the court against good teams. Turnover. Bad shot. Allow his man to get to the rim or to have an open 3 pointer. And then he is pulled.

Getting him back to being an off-ball guard does fix those issues. Jasper is not a point guard. Does not have a point guard mentality. He has a scorer's mentality. Play him next to a true point guard and he has talent and ability. He is quick, has some length, and can shot the ball. He gets stronger and plays off ball with a true point and he will be a double-digit scorer easily.

You watched a different JJ than most because none of that is likely unless he does a complete 180.

His day one development until now was minimum at best.....is this on Pope or does he simply not have the skills at this level (to be con't) The out of position stuff is nonsense....you still have to make decisions w/ the ball, regardless, and the game was much too fast for him the majority of the time (again...on Pope or him?)

😂 Spare me the “these poor kids” bullcrap. Acting like these are just little ole kids playing basketball who should be off limits to criticism is comical. They begged for NIL. Well this is what comes with it. They’re no different pro players.

Lmao that moron really tried to subtly throw the race card in his post. It doesn’t matter who the kid is or their background, if they’re productive or the team is good then they’re treated great. DeMarcus isn’t exactly the type of kid that Derrick would say “fits in” here and he was and still is beloved. He’s my favorite player to ever put the jersey on. The only time a player gets attacked is when they’re clearly hurting the team with their play. Of the 9 guys who played regular minutes, nobody did more to hurt UK while in the games than Jasper.

My god get the kid and his family away from UK. Let him go play somewhere like Mississippi State where he can throw up his 20 shots a game and not have to defend so he can be happy.

On his 30 second interval comment, 9/10 I’d agree, but in this case Jasper really couldn’t be left on the floor more than that because he’s the worst defender by far and his offense was basically non existent for 90% of the year. His best game, easily, was the very first exhibition against Purdue. He looked like a guy who could be All SEC as a freshman. From there on out he looked like he didn’t even belong at UK most games.

I'm on the outside with Jasper. I think Pope used him wrong. If he would have spent his freshman year just being a spot up shooter and work on defense, I believe he would have gotten more PT. His shot looked good but his drives delivered turnovers.

The thing is he is too weak to be a basketball player at this level. You can’t just shoot, or just work on defense. If you turn the ball over, don’t pass, make so many mistakes that you can’t see the court it won’t matter what you try to do. He needs to be in the gym lifting all year, eating right, training for strength.

Whoever evaluated the kids talent is just as responsible. He has to business playing high level college.

I spoke poorly about him on here, I think he’s terrible, but those who leave comments on the kids page is crossing the line big time.

But our we not allowed to speak on poor performances on a random message board? This has a North Korea vibe to it.

I was hoping JJ's family would allow someone to coach this kid to help him reach his potential. I have seen many players who were told they are great but in reality they lack in many areas.
All I know is while I sat and watched the UK-IOWA ST game, when JJ came in the game he had his lunch money taken from him along with his manhood.
Paint it anyway you want but against Iowa St JJ embarrassed himself.

If you're harassing our players on social media, stop. It's not worth it.

If Derrick is out looking for criticism or browsing message boards and being offended, get over it. Fans have a right to criticize every part of the program. We're the lifeblood of it.
Fans who are legit can criticize but the BBN supports or says nothing. These men may make millions but they are on a free ride provided by UK. Many posters are fake and are part of the hate UK at all cost crowd. No one on this board recruits or coaches. If Pope fails so be it but-he played here, he won a Championship here and has won the right to be supported. This hate is toxic and makes the Internet a place that being stupid a virtue. If the boosters want him gone he will be gone and it will not be based on Internet clicks.

I remember the 1994 season Rick Pitino tried to play Tony Delk at the point guard spot. It did not work. He did not look like the same player as he was when he played off ball.

Fans can be harsh and suck BUT we can't have player's parents going off on social media. There's been multiple occasions recently. JQ's Dad wanted to fight!!! Like are we seriously that dysfunctional as a program?

What good does this accomplish? Keep thing internal and focus. Another poorly managed program issue. All players and those closely associated should be advised to stay off or limit social media.

Might not be fair, but that comes with making big money and having a huge following.

Jasper has showcased what is what with Overtime Elite. A bunch of players who play ZERO defense and AAU ball. A me-first, 1-on-1 style. I hope we never recruit another OTE player again. He couldn't even bring the ball up the court against Iowa State, and we know he can't stay in front of any defender. He was -9 in 1:57 in the first half!!!!!

As pointed out, before NIL it was a little harder to criticize players ("they are just 18 years old") but now they are paid. Paid = take the criticism, plain and simple.

And the internet is what the internet is. That is the culture we live in now unfortunately. It is a small percentage of the overall fan base, but some people don't understand that.
Nailed it. OTE is basketball poison.

Complaining about Jasper only playing in 30 second intervals....

In a 30 second interval, Jasper would miss a contested step back 3, get beat beat on defense for a layup, turn the ball over, lose his man on defense and give up an open 3, then come down and miss another step back 3.

You KNEW when Jasper came in, the other team was about to make a run. I think most of us agree, Pope shouldn't have been playing him at all down the stretch.

Jasper was getting charity minutes because Pope wanted to try to appease him so he'd come back.

I understand his uncle taking up for him. Totally get that, and yes there are some fanatics who take it too far in their criticism. But, these young men are basically pro players now with NIL. Not like they weren't getting 'paid' before, because we know that certainly happened over the years. So opinions of his performance is fair game.

However, a lot of this is on the coaching staff. Now did JJ player well in some games this past season, yes he did. But when he got pressured he couldn't handle it so that's on the coaching staff for putting him in the game and that he needs development there. Also, this young man looks like he's never seen a weight room. He absolutely needs to get stronger to better handle the physicality of the game. Again, that's on the coaching staff.

Agree but not all freshmen are polished players. He has a long way to go but what I'm saying is that when Pope put him on the floor this year, and he did, Pope should have said "don't drive the ball".

These family members are popping off because the fan base knows what is what. Their reaction tells the story. I dont blame them as family members but they know deep down that this is a comedy of errors. Quaintance got a payday and Johnson isn't good enough. Tough titties

hey Unc

he's not a kid, he's a professional who took serious money to play.

The days of the "college experience" are over. He better be ready to play, face the criticism and deliver or pack his bags.

No one has one damn bit of sympathy for a 19 year old millionaire playing a game

And his uncle needs to pipe down, kid had plenty of run and all he did was help lose leads with his presence on court, opposing coaches salivated when he entered the game
Getting behind double digits is on Pope… he should have subbed a player or two but not damn near the starting five. Jasper was usually part of that and that’s on Pope not all on Jasper

But then you’ve got uncle bitching about why JJ never gets in games. Family members need to STFU and let the coaches do their jobs. If that makes you unhappy, then **** off somewhere else.

Exactly 💯. When u consider this and JQ's Dad's response you start to see it was an internal issue. All major D1 athletes should stay off social media platforms during the season. Nothing good comes from it.

honestly, I thought the only reasons Jasper got any playing time was Pope trying to keep the family happy thinking about having him next year.

I heard on KSR today the tweet that Derrick made about Jasper. I understand a family member being upset at playing time, and fans saying bad things. We all love our family members and being involved in sports all my life, and my sons lives probably thought my kids were alot better than they actually were as well. Answer me this? What game pointed out to anyone that Jasper was ready this year to guard and facilitate as a point guard at the power four level? He was isolated and scored on at will. He literally fell down bringing the ball up the court without anyone guarding him in the Iowa state game. Most games, against strong guards he was unplayable. Coach Pope and his staff deserve alot of criticism this year, and i mean alot. Not playing Jasper is one item they deserve zero criticism for. The kid is not ready without another 20 pounds of muscle to play at the high D1 level. I also throw out there that the kid made a lot of money and drove a Tesla. So this makes him a pro, and i am sorry if the fans were harsh but he did deserve some criticism for his play this year.

By all accounts the Johnson's are wonderful folks. They are just standing up for their loved one and that is admirable. Not everyone is cut out to be a high level basketball player, and im sorry to tell them but until Jasper gets a lot bigger and strong than he will go into the pile that my family goes into; Pretty good players that were just too small to play at that level. Except we didnt get a ton of money and a Tesla for this!
