I hope it isn't a case of his knowing next season is going to be much worse i.e. "rat leaving a sinking ship".
Is your glass always half empty? We are not losing an awesome lineman. We are losing a starter from a line that needed overhauling. We need to start 2 sophomores, a redshirt freshman, and two true frosh next year. Time to build for two years from now.

If All SEC honor roll is the goal, then we lost one.

My glass is 50% of capacity, reality, not sunshine pumper. Losing a starting OL is never a good thing, the new recruits may not pan out and starting the OL you describe with a new qb who has almost no experience is a recipe for a repeat of this season as a best case scenario. The teams ahead of us, and the list of those is growing, are not starting a bunch of babies on the OL.

The idea of building for two years from now seems like an abandonment of our historic "next year!!" mantra in favor of "wait til two years from now!!". What do we have to sell to recruits? Our recruiting class is sitting at #20 right now. When is Beamer the great recruiter going to deliver?

He wanted to leave after the spring game last year but he got hurt. He was the best OL on a bad line. I think we’re better off sticking Tree over there and letting him settle in on the position vs jumping around on the line.

Well, I hate to see an offensive lineman leave, but I read somewhere that he didn't play this year due to injury. If that's true, then maybe it's not that bad. Our offense line has been a problem for several seasons. Hopefully, that is being addressed. both through the portal and recruiting.

2 years from now will never come with NIL. This year is all you can count on

Granted, he would have been an O line starter, but it does grate me these young men hang around a program and receive medical attention and then transfer out for money. we really didn't have them this year, so where is the loss?

The portal will ensure that any young players who do develop into real contributors next season will jump to another team if they have to suffer through a losing season. Unless a kid grew up dreaming of playing football for South Carolina, it will be hard to hold on to talented players in struggling programs.

Yep! Of all the guys we have on the team for ‘24, you can’t count on *any* of them being there in ‘25….. especially when you see freaking established kickers leaving.
