does anyone have any details of why Howie isn't on the team at the moment. I really hope we can get him back before the start of the season. He is a must-have if we are ever going to make a push for Atlanta. Damn this sucks! Thanks for the info!

He's easily our 3rd best defensive tackle. Cox and Boyd can't play the whole game, so losing an athletic 6-4 330lb senior hurts. Our second string DT's are now Eulls and Virges (two RSFr)...after that it's PJ Jones(275lb) or move Devin Jones (260lb)back to tackle. The SEC is as strong at running back from top to bottom as it's been in recent memory (returning 4 1000 yrd rushers), so I would say quality depth at DT is a must have if we want to improve on last year's record.

Howie provided much needed depth and I considered him a co-starter also. This will be felt if we can't get him back. Does anyone know of the details and also know if he might come back?

He doesn't feel appreciated and thinks he won't get drafted because he isn't a starter. Man I just hope Wilson can talk some since in him and we can get him back for the fall.

FWIW - According to my son, the 'then' coaching staff @ ICC thought as highly of Howie as they did the year before about McPhee! One game I attended, both Auburn and Tennessee were there recruiting him. However, Jeff broke his wrist and missed like the last four games of the year and fell under the radar. Real good kid and a 'force to be reckoned with' according to my son.

when you have Cox and Boyd, who will play in the NFL, in front of you. Even at that, we rotate alot and he would get good looks from the NFL in the late rounds if he plays. Even he has to know that and so I suspect there is more to the story than just playing time. Not starting rumors, just using common sense.

How many quality 300+ pounders do we have?? "Not on the team at the moment"?

With Carmon moving to OL, Howie is a big key to the defensive front. He made plays last year and, without Carmon, would likely see more time this year, relieving Cox and Boyd.

If Howie moves on, I wouldn't be surprised to see Carmon in the game on short yardage defense (to have the extra 300+ pounder on the line).</p>

He might be back. I heard financial issues were involved, but not sure why or what caused them or any other details. I do know that the "am I an NFL guy" question will impact his decision of whether or not he comes back. He thinks it's a line of BS because he's not starting. I'm not sure he feels under appreciated so much as trying to do what's right for his family. If he was confident he'd be drafted, and he could be a solid 4-7 round pick with a good year, he'd come back.

of putting our best 11 on the field on defense. I really thought this would mean either:

(1) we play Whitley, Bonner, and Mitchell at the same time with one less LB; and/or
(2) we play Cox someat DE, since we have more depth at DT, with Boyd and Howie.
