You should read the article. I have read many about 3D printing also, but this one talks about how they used metal powders and melted them down in layers.
Also has a video of the the little engine that fired up and ran flawlessly on the first attempt. I don't think they expected that.
You really would have to read the article to appreciate the science involved.
