Damn I love reminiscing about those days when nobody but us gave a **** about college baseball. Had the MFer all to ourself [and Texas, Cal State Fullerton, Wichita State, Miami, Flarda State, and a very few others].

the SEC being better in baseball actually gives us a better chance at winning a National Championship than it did in the 80's because back in the day, we didn't have to have as much pitching to do well in the SEC- but that would come back to bite us in the *** in the postseason. See 1985.

Sure, it's harder to win the SEC nowadays, but I think 100% of us would trade the SEC championship for a National Championship any and every day.

Jim's trivia question.......Has to be Steve D'ercole for those of you who go that far back with

...from the late 1970's through the early 1980's (SEC Champ and host of first SEC Tourney in 1977, SEC West Runner-Up in 1980, SEC West Champ in 1982). Ole Miss was 5th nationally in attendance in 1978, andhad nine dates over the years of at least 3,500 inattendance at our old ballpark through the 1978 season.

But two of the worst baseball seasons in SEC history (1984 and 1985), coupled with the peak of the Clark/Palmeiro era, finished some Rebel fans off until the Bianco era. We had decent crowds and a good team in 1986, but underachieved in 1987 and were pitiful again in 1988, the last season at Old Swayze. Wehad only one crowd of over 3,500 in the final 10 years of Old Swayze(1979-1988), a March 6, 1988 date vs. MSU.

We then treaded water through much of the Gibbs-to-Kessinger transition, and the Kessinger-to-Harrison transition was unpopular. Polk outworked and outrecruited all our coaches (from Gibbs through Harrison) until Bianco was hired. The interest level andcrowds were immediately better for Bianco's first season in 2001 and have improved steadily inmost years since.

P.S. Those old ESPN games from 1979-1985 were great. I loved their intro, with the old-timey pinball machine. ESPNmade a star of Texas 2bBilly Bates. And who can forget Florida State's banana uniforms, Smoke Laval tackling the base runner at Dudy Noble, or the Miami phantom pickoff (designed by 'Cane pitching coach Skip Bertman) against base-stealing whiz Phil Stephenson of Wichita State? Good times.

You guys had some good teams. I watched most of it from 79 on. I remember the names Summlin or Summerlin, Laddie Renfroe, Pomaranz, and Cottrell? You had good teams, we were better.
