It’s possible but I keep coming back to the idea that, for instance with Collins, every piece of info we had was he was about to put pen to paper. Pope had recruited him at minimum a year at this point so it’s not like Pope’s personality wasn’t known to him.Either that OR pope really is that much worse than Gillispie or Tubby at recruiting...which is a possibility I haven't completely counted out
And to hear most people, that doesn’t matter anymore it’s just money (I disagree with that but it’s obviously a big factor). And yet something changed and he didn’t sign early.
I also think Pope (again if the article was true which I believe it was) is not seasoned yet with how this works at this level, but to me it’s an easily fixable thing. If he’s getting too emotional, get him out of the money negotiations. He’s a smart guy and he can adjust. The supports behind the scene need to get better as well. “Here’s who I want, here are my priorities and needs. Make the budget happen and get it done for me”. The details of a contract with a player shouldn’t depend on Mark Pope’s negotiating acumen. This is why I’m hoping we’ll hear about the new basketball GM any spring.
I also have to believe that the JMI situation will be worked out, but it’s too late for this HS class. I don’t think Stein would’ve agreed to be here if he didn’t feel like he was going to have extra hurdles above the historical hurdles UK football has always had. I’m hopeful the JMI stuff gets fixed because it doesn’t sound like a growth mindset for their business if their only SEC school they solely represent (UGA is not exclusive to JMI) is hamstrung by their own strategies. Change the effing strategy.
All just MHO.
