Montana was great and he made the most of the system he was in. Give Elway a Hall of fame reciever and he wins many more super bowls.

And he won his first two without Jerry Rice. Unless you think Dwight Clark and Freddie Soloman are HOF WR's.

put him on Montana's teams ist no comparison. Marino never had any defense,ol,or rb but willed his team to playoffs every year. You guys are dumb. Not that it matters, but he had a great college coach. Dan Marino was slow as christmas but played the qb position like no other, had a rocket launcher arm and <span style="font-weight: bold;">the fake spike automatically makes your argument invalid</span>

I actually think he could be the best of his "type" of QB in NFL history. Certainly someone that can throw the ball better is likely to come along at some point, but until that happens, could you imagine an All-time NFL team with Montana and Tebow in a two-QB system like Florida ran?

I think Bill Walsh sort of wanted to do that with Steve Young and Montana, but he couldn't quite figure out how to do it.

throwing the ball every play doesnt make the you the best QB ever. Marino was good- but he carries Montana's luggage when Joe visits Miami

You switch these guys its not even close. Marino with Montana's weapons and defense. Come on now. Dan never had a loaded gun and bullet proof vest like Joe. Montana was no slouch, but I must agree to disagree Coach

I don't know if she liked it as much as she did mine - maybe she liked it more - I never asked - something I didn't need to know at that time.

Montana is likely in much better shape than me now, but my *** is still not that bad. At 6'3" 185 lbs.I'm definately below the chubbybutt level.

If they got traded for each other, I don't think Marino wins them two more Super Bowls, and I think Montana would have won them at least one and thrown for 30-40 TD himself.

You conviently left of the 49's defense as a reason for rings. Dan never had 1 period. Were the O's they had comparable? Of course. But, as a coach in real life, I think you understand that defenses win championships.

49's defense > Dolphin's defense

But Lott, Keena Turner and Eric Wright were the only 49ers on defense that were on their first four Super Bowls with Montana.

The 49ers used to use a lot of older veterans like Fred Dean, Hacksaw Reynolds, Matt Millen, and etc. to round out their defenses in that era.

Brad Johnson & Trent Dilfer has rings. Does that mean they're better than Dan or even Jim Kelly? Are u 17ing kidding me? I think my top 5 alltime is Montana, Elway, Marino, Brady and Aikman/Young. But Brady's not been the same QB since 08' (knee surgery). But the QB's of the Montana/Elway/Marino era had DBs raping thier WRs and STILL made plays. And puuuhhhlleeezzzee Brees isn't even the best QB in his conference much less ever.

It's a wonder when people discuss the Manning brothers' talent, they say, "It runs in the family."</p>

Despite raising two fine quarterbacks, Archie Manning was not a fine quarterback himself. People completely miss that.</p>

His career record is the worst in NFL history for quarterbacks with at least 100 starts. He went 35-101-3. That's not a misprint.</p>

He also had a 67.1 QB rating and threw 173 interceptions compared to 125 touchdowns in his career. Ouch.

OK, now go ahead and insert the proverbial, "he played on bad teams" comment here............</p>

Are y'all somehow inadvertently replying to each other? No one is even remotely on the same page... not even the same book.

Reading this flight-of-ideas is gonna make me have schizophrenic break with reality.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">You have to recognize what Walsh was doing in SF when evaluating Montana's legacy.

I just think its hard to say who is better Elway or Montana.

The only way I would answer it is if I was a brand new franchise, and could draft either one of them as rookie and not knowing the talent around them, who do I take? I would take Elway, but its close. He took some terrible Denver teams to the Superbowl, was more durable and a better runner.

From 1980 to 1994 in all of Joe Montana's he only played 16 regular season game three times.

Now if I have one game and I need to win a Superbowl, and I can have either one at their peak and full healthy? I take Montana.

What about if Manningham steps out and the Giants stall? What about if the Patriots fall on Bradshaw's fumble?

Just saying there are a lot of plays that go into winning and losing a single game. What Brady and Belicheck have done in an era where dynasty creation is as difficult as ever is remarkable.

I'm not big into the "greatest ever" argument for that reason. Every era is different. Is Jack greater than Tiger? You could make any number of arguments both ways, and I wouldn't disagree with either. I think it's better to focus on greatest of a particular era and not worry about that all-time stuff, because there are no comparisons you can make that make it seem clear. Montana was the best of his era, clearly. You can make an argument that Brady is the best of his era. Personally, I think reaching 5 Super Bowls in 11 seasons in this era of the NFL is about as impressive as it gets, but I won't say it makes Brady better than someone from another era.
