Today's spread formation is nothing more than the old Single Wing, except you usually don't have tight ends and you employ parts of the wishbone-veer option. You want to see old-fashioned Single Wing watch Florida with Tim Tebow. That's classic old-school Single Wing, where Tebow has the option of running off-tackle, outside, giving it to the "halfback" (Percy Harvin or his successor), or passing it. The only thing Tebow doesn't do that Choo Choo Justice or Sammy Baugh would is quick-kick out of it on 3rd down or drop kick for a field goal.
