He would be the perfect hire for Defensive Coordinator. Im not sure if we have contacted him but I believe we would be wise to do so. Tennessee has always had good defenses under him and I would love to get him before Clemson does.

...and secondly, it would be a stupid hire. Mullen talked about an attacking, eleven men to the ball defense. Chavis is much more of a conservative coach. I think we've played enough base defense in the past couple of years, and I'm all for a more aggressive style. Paul Rhoads would be a great choice.

I think Tn. had the number 4 defense in D1... despite little or no help from their offense.

Pretty impressive.

...has some great athletes on defense. Particularly at safety (Eric Berry may be the best defensive player in the country), and defensive line. But Chavis runs a pretty vanilla defense. He doesn't blitz a lot. Maybe he didn't have to because his d-line could get pressure without it. But regardless, I'd find it hard to believe that we'd go that route after Mullen's comments about what kind of defense he wanted.
