Ledger was great in the Dark Knight. Phoenix was also amazing in Joker.

Phoenix Joker might be the darkest movie I’ve ever seen....really liked it. Ledger was great but hard to compare the two
The only thing I know for sure is that Jared Leto's joker is in last place.
He won't get the pick. But considering how corny (and dated) that movie was, I think Nicholson did a fantastic job for being somewhat confined. The Darknight and Joker movies were more serious and darker, and that will always lend itself to better acting.
Imagine what Nicholson could have done at 52 with the Dark Night script...
Still. Ledger's was fantastic. Love both.

Both were great and were perfect for the movies they appeared in.
But I'd I have to pick Heath Ledger. When it was announced he was playing the Joker people lost their **** saying he couldn't do it. Then when the first poster came out and people were like holy ****. He was something we'd never seen before.
Please don't think I'm knocking Phoenix's performance. Perfect for that movie he was in.
It kinda sucks The Dark Knight came out that year cause Robert Downey Jr absolutely killed it topic thunder and would've won the Oscar any other year.
My question is, would Ledger have won the Oscar had he not died?

Ledger by a bit. I actually thought the new joker was overrated. Phoenix was really good though. The movie was really slow to start and the plot wasn't really anything we haven't seen before. It was good but definitely not best picture quality imo

Best Joker still goes to Ledger as IMO he was the joker and not the build up to the joker.
That isn’t to take away for Phoenix’s character because he was great too, just different.

Heath Ledger's Joker was so good they made Suicide Squad and people went to see it.
Heath Ledger's Joker was so good that when SS didn't work, they cast Joaquin Phoenix to do an entire movie about the Joker.

Ledger was great but NOT the man that truly existed beyond the character of Joker.
