And as an AD you would be laughed at when searching if you fired him. It’s not about now or next year it’s about perception we give to coaches and players in the future.I wouldn't have done either. No raise, no extension. 3 years remaining. Show me something in 2019 and then we will talk.

some of you.
Buyouts go down which each year gone off the contract. Hence the term "buyout", you're buying out the rest of the contract, so the less years left on the contract the less to buy out.
Nope you didn’t but in the world of college football you let everybody know you will at the first sign of trouble by not extending him after year 1. While his record last year could have been better he did go out and represent this school in a very positive light to high school coaches and playersNowhere in my post did I say anything about firing him.

Contracts have terms on which buyouts are paid, its rare the school is on the hook for the entire buyout amount. It's not hard to restructure contracts to give '4 years' but not increase the overall buyout (aka guaranteed money).
The athletic had a good article on Mick Cronin and how he ended up at UCLA. His contract was structured in a similar way and that was a major factor in him leaving. Obviously, an in demand coach like him would have more leverage to increase the guaranteed buyout.
We need info on the buyout then. If the extension and the raise don't effect the current buyout then it's fine. If Joe sucks this year and we are on the hook for an extra year and and extra 3.2 milly then we need to take a hard look at John Cohen and he's ability to be our AD.
Before the extension, the buyout was $0. I highly doubt we bumped it from that to $12.8 million.

I highly doubt that's right. Both sides would be dumb to sign a contract with no buy out
If you read the fine print, it states that each university had a chance to review the figures collected and offer corrections based on any inconsistencies. So what is published is what we agreed to be out there.
There is also a link to the methodology section which lists “other payments” for each school. One particular note was very, very interesting:
”FLORIDA: Paid $500,000 to Mississippi State to cover the buyout Mullen owed.”
https://sports.usatoday.com/2018/10/03/2018-ncaa-football-head-coach-salaries-methodology/
So, if we let Mullen (our most successful coach ever) walk to another SEC school for a measley $500k, you think we really have some massive buyout for a first year coach?
I doubt it's a huge buyout, but I do bet it is a buyout
