I said a couple times last year that I was glad we signed him. One night I was taking a leak at the Grill (where they always have the sports page posted up above the urinal) and there was an article on McKenzie on the front page. Academy or not, the dude looked like a freak in the newspaper article. Based on the coaches comments, and especially the comments by Charles Burns in the recent GP article, sounds like he is going to be a good one.

McKenzie?
Addison Lawrence?
Chris White?
Do kickers even count in the selection of the GWH?

I agree. He was the Mississippi Academy Player of the year. From Starkville Academy that's saying a lot when you are competing with your JA's and Preps.

It's my understanding that his parents actually wanted him to go to another school, Vandy or one of the more elite academic institutions.

A buddy of mine has daughters that went to school with him and he stated McKenzie is the type of guy you want your daughters to bring home.

Hopefully he can transplant that niceness to kicking arse on the field.

thomas webb is my great white hope. he and chris white are my top 2 followed by zach smith, phillip freeman, bo walters, addison lawrence, etc. I think that our kickers should count considering how atrocious our kicking has been in the past

it seemed pretty clear from the "who's your boy this year?" thread that Zach Smith was a fan favorite. My guess it's because he's a white dude playing a skill position not quarterback.

My problem with the GWH, is it usually gives average skill players a boost in popularity only because they're easier to "identify" with.

Other than kickers and OL, the last white dude playing for State who was worth a **** was Kevin Sluder.

You've got a point. However, often times white players are stereotyped negatively. I assure you that on this board and many others you will find people that actually believe that Co-Eric Riley and Antonio Hargro were superior receivers to walk-on Lance Long and high school QB Will Prosser.

This is not to claim that Long or Prosser was the second coming of Eric Moulds.

Read this part again: "Other than kickers and OL, the last white dude playing for State who was worth a **** was Kevin Sluder."

I've compared every punter we've had to him over the years, which is possibly why I've hated every last punter we've had since him...
