First of all, the ONLY reason that this guy got a scholarship offer was because of the good ol' boy system. The only time he would have played for us is during a spring scrimmage. If we are going to do this, we need to do like every other school in the country and offer guys like this a chance to walk-on and if they pan out, give them a scholarship.

Secondly, we have some VERY pressing needs right now- mainly because of recruiting decisions just like this. We can't afford to just give out scholarships to someone who knows someone's uncle knows Rockey Felker. We need o-linemen. Badly. We need to get guys like Bumphis and other WR's. We need cornerbacks. We have no real need to spend a scholarship on a practice squad QB. And if he really thinks that he could play in the SEC, which he can't, he's going to transfer anyway.

We were this guys only shot at playing SEC ball. I don't care what Vandy has to say. If he was that good, they will scoop him up tommorrow. This guy had to call Samford to get a scholarship. And for those of you feel sorry for this guy- this may help- he was taking up a scholarship of someone who deserves it and someone who can help us out. The only reason he didn't look around is because no one else wanted him. Look at Tyler Russell and Fletcher Cox. Them saying that they are still committed to MSU hasn't stopped Alabama from coming after them.

I'm sure he is a nice guy and all, but this is the SEC, and unless you have a plethora of 5 star QB's, you can't waste a scholarship on a guy like this. And he's a Bama legacy anyway.

Byrne didn't necesarily lie to this guy. Byrne didn't pull his scholarship, and Byrne never said anything about having scholarship offers after the new coach was hired. He simply said that all commitments would be honored.

And I applaud Dan Mullen for doing the right thing for MSU. THIS is the right way to do things.

henig did beat alabama....not too many state qb's can say that.
Uh, no he didn't. MSU beat Alabama despite only a net 3 points from our Henig-led offense (10 points scored by our offense less a pick-6 that Henig threw). We won in spite of Henig that day, not because of him.

you're wrong, he threw 2 TD passes in that game, we won 24-16.

Henig did throw a pick-6 in the 06 game and was only something like 9 out of 20 passing though. The offense had a net of only 10 points (not 3) made up of 17 offensive points scored less Henig's pick-6. He didn't have a terrible game, but we won that game because of our defense, not anything our offense did.

I understand what you're saying, but I think all bets are off when a coaching change occurs. I've heard all the "you commit to the school and not the coach" crap, but I doubt many people would have questioned Hopson at all if his decommittment had come after a coaching change.

ultimately, both situations involve two sides who both hope the other side doesnt screw em. Hopson commits early and leaves us high and dry in the 11th hour when basically all other talented wings are already spoken for.
and Mullen has now just left Hollingsworth high and dry in the 11th hour, when basically all other bigger programs have locked up QBs for this signing period.

Hollingsworth ability, or supposed lack there of is moot here...its about screwing over the other side late in the game.
Yeah, he may have never seen the field wearing Maroon(or whatever color it looks like next season) on a Saturday, but that isnt for sure known. just like there is a chance Hopson could have come here and sucked hard. in both instances, the odds are against Hollingsworth being great and Hopson sucking, but we all know recruiting has a large bit of subjectivity to it.

in the end, Hollingsworth gave his commitment to MSU, and MSU didnt hold up their end of the deal. and Hopson gave his commitment, and he didnt hold up his end of the deal.
thats all i was sayin. justify it all you want with the coaching change or Hollingsworth not being good enought to it acceptable.

Charity work, schools, community, etc. A friend of my does stuff with/for him and thinks he is "a really great kid." (At our ages, everybody under 35 is a kid.)

ineptitude at the QB position for State that a 6000 yd career is very surprising. But when you think about it, that should be average to less than average for a 3 year starter.

I wish Madkin's career would not have ended with the 2001 season.

I was in school at MSU during the Madkin years.

I took an intro ag class with him. He was a good guy.

I remember how much **** he caught from fans sometimes, despite the fact that he managed and won games. MSU fans still don't give him enough credit to this day.

I have always believed that he would have been embraced more by the MSU fans had he been a white QB. This isn't not a shot at MSU, because I feel the same way about Romaro Miller and OM. It didn't help that both Fant and Manning were waiting in the wings. Both fanbases felt that those guys could take them to the next level.

finished out 2001, he probably would have added another 750 - 1000yds. As far as MSU QB records sucking, if you take Eli out of the mix, our career totals do not look greatly different. The fact is that the 10,000+ yard QB is a relatively new phenomenon. Remember that you guys have been ground hogs for much of the last 30 years so, your QB records are in line with that.

not only to offer a post with my handle as the title, but you clearly stayed up during naptime to compose an ode in my honor.

Now I feel guilty for not giving a crap about you.

but that is a load of crap and you know it. Red flags went off in my head after reading that story. Byrne said that we would honor our scholarship offers to all commitments, and then we don't. There is no way to lawyerese yourself out of that language.

I feel horrible for the kid. Nothing like having the rug snatched out from under you at the last minute.

It's not like we have all of our scholarships committed already. Mullen is going to get a pass on the first year or two anyways. I just don't understand why we have to break our word to a guy who has committed to us and not wavered throughout his commitment. He may have never seen the field in college, but that's a ****** way to treat somebody. And to me, it reflects poorly on my alma mater. I wish we'd have kept him and somehow found another scholarship out of the 8 or so spots we still have open.
