Just checked about 10 bowl projection sites...

..they virtually all project Miss. State vs. Michigan State in the Gator Bowl (a couple had Miss. State playing Northwestern in the Gator Bowl). My pessimism over the last 2 games was not allowing for a New Year's Day bowl. I guess the more objective observers are seeing a trend in Miss. State football I am not seeing.

That sounds about right. A lot of you people must be bipolar. You were way to high on this team 2 weeks ago and way too low now. We will still win 8-9 games this season and that's plenty for the Gator Bowl, even with the SEC loaded with so many 10 win teams.

It probably has to do with other options also.

We know we are behind Bama, LSU, TAMU, Florida, Georgia, and SC. Vandy is 5-4, and UT and Mizzou are 4-5. UM is 5-4 and Ark is 4-5.

8-4 with an Egg Bowl win probably puts us as the #7 SEC slot. If the SEC gets 2 BCS slots, that gets us a pretty good bowl game at 8-4. 7-5 with 5 straight Ls, though, probably puts us behind any 6-6 teams.

Yeah, and I think we matchup really well with Mich State. They're not going to beat us to the edges like A&M, and they don't have near the athletes up front as Bama/LSU. They'll try to run over us, and we'd win a close game 24-21 or something.

I have seen a couple of projections putting us in the Chic-fil-a Bowl. The consensus is definitely Atlanta or Jacksonville, with Jacksonville being the popular projection.

The are factoring in...

..where MSU is going to finish in the SEC. Based on what I am now seeing out the current MSU football team, they are projecting MSU to finish higher in the SEC than I am. But they are the objective observers when I am the emotionally invested guy who is seeing a MSU team suddenly appearing worn out & timid.

Exactly.

The amount of emotional highs and lows that many here seem to go through week to week and game to game makes me somewhat curious about how they manage successful relationships in the real world.

You send the top 2 to the BCS, #3 goes to the Citrus, #4/5 to the Cotton (geography plays a part), and #'s 4/5 through 7 get the Outback/Peach/Gator. Unless something changes like UM suddenly winning 7 games, there's a big gap between #'s 7 and 8, particularly since none of the Florida bowls will want Vandy, even if they manage 8 wins.

so if lightning strikes the LSU sideline and we somehow win that game - does that get us to the Peach ? (I'm pulling hard for the Peach because of proximity ) .... dont get me wrong, I would take the Gator bowl with no complaints and still attend

Thanks, Spock, for reminding me I'm human...

..forgive me for being "too emotionally high" when this team was 7-0 & entering the Bama game in one of the most critical football games in MSU history. I should have gone with a Vulcan meditation technique that week, so I could have remained logical. While I'm at it, also forgive me for being disgusted with the laydown job against aTm. I guess I should also work on getting that emotion in check.

IF we beat LSU and then win out and finish 10-2, the Cotton is more likely.

From wikipedia...

The Southeastern Conference has ten bowl tie-ins.[SUP][14][/SUP]

  • #1 Bowl Championship Series. The winner of the SEC Championship Game gains an automatic berth to a BCS bowl game, preferentially the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
  • #2 The Capital One Bowl must select the team with the best overall record among non-BCS playing SEC teams, or a team within one game of the best record.
  • #3-4 The Cotton Bowl Classic has first pick of remaining teams from the Western Division, and the Outback Bowl typically picks a remaining team from the Eastern Division.
  • #5 The Chick-fil-A Bowl selects after those two bowls.
  • #6 The Gator Bowl receives the sixth pick.
  • #7-8 The Music City Bowl and the Liberty Bowl work with the SEC office to determine the seventh and eighth picks.
  • #9 The BBVA Compass Bowl receives the ninth choice of SEC teams. In years where the SEC does not have nine bowl eligible teams, the BBVA Compass Bowl will select from the Sun Belt Conference instead.#10 The Independence Bowl receives the tenth pick.

The way I read it, is that if Bama gets the NCG, UGA gets the Sugar, UF gets the Cap One, LSU gets the Cotton, USCe gets the Outback, aTm gets the Chick-fil-A, and we'd get the Gator Bowl (assuming we end up 8-4 or 9-3). I think with 7 wins, our worst option is the Music City (which I could be wrong about).

There's a difference between being human and being borderline dysfunctional. Of course I was excited about being 7-0. But I never thought there was a chance in hell we would beat Bama and I figured there was a real good chance we were about to go on a 3-game losing streak. That's what usually happens when you play the 3 toughest games on your schedule back-to-back road-home-road. I figured going into the season we'd win 8 games and we're on pace to match or beat that. And I'll take that every year.

There is a chance we could fall further than Music City with 7 wins. If OM, has 7 wins, you can bet your *** Music City will take them over us, especially if they just beat us in the Egg Bowl. That would put us in BBVA Compass which would be an epic disappointment.

Bottom line: our guys need to get their damn heads on straight and take care of business because my holiday travel plans depend on it.***

Edit: Liberty Bowl may be as low as we can fall...FWIW

Did I call you guilty of said action? No. The fact that it offended you does speak volumes though, Ronny**

No one is at fault for being "emotionally high" going into the Alabama game, but the amount of crying and people jumping FULLY off the bandwagon on here the past two weeks has been laughable at best. Anyone that really thought we were one of the top 10 teams in the country going into Alabama was wearing maroon blinders and hadn't been watching us play very closely. Top 25? Absolutely.

I would agree with you if the two losses weren't games that were over by the end of the first quarter. I knew we would lose to Alabama and possibly by a wide margin, but I thought we would hang with them for at least a little while. That game was over after alabamas first two series. We weren't even competitive. And if possible, we were even less competitive vs A&M. I knew that was a game we could easily lose, but I never NEVER would've thought we would go down 31-0 one drive into the second half. We didnt lose those two games, we were embarrassed.....run off the field with no effort. So that's why I'm so low on them now. Until they show me otherwise, I say 8-4 is our ceiling and 7-5 is at least a 50/50 shot. 8-4 is great....until you start 7-0 and factor in how bad auburn, TN, and Arkansas have been this year.

Technically, yes, but we've seen horse-trading starting at the Cotton Bowl level before. I think there's an SEC rule on the books that a bowl can drop down to a team with a 1-loss difference in record, and it's applicable to other bowls besides the Citrus.
Usually it's the Outback Bowl that does that crap and screws up the process.
This year, I'd keep an eye on the Cotton Bowl wanting TAMU, particularly if they have Texas lined up on the Big 12 side. TAMU is very likely going to end up 9-3, and LSU will have at least 2 losses.
I also don't think the Music City would pick us two years in a row, although honestly I'd rather go back there than to Memphis.

I agree, but I would argue that the game ended on Bama's first drive when they converted the 4th and 1 or when we had the FG blokced on our first drive. As for aTm, that was about as bad in terms of preparation and execution as I have ever seen, and I am not limiting this statement to MSU. We were so unbelievably unprepared and failed to execute anything that Mullen et al made Sly look like Knute 17ing Rockne. If we get blown the 17 out this weekend, I would say 7-5 is greater than 50%. If we can keep it close and come out with a "moral victory", maybe these guys can find some mojo and whip the swines and bears. But I agree, until I see otherwise, I aint expecting it.

Does anyone else hate the corporate bowl renaming?

I much prefer the sound of the Peach Bowl, the Citrus Bowl, and the Hall of Fame Bowl to the Chic-Fil-A bowl, the Capital One Bowl, and the Outback Bowl.

I'd be much less embarrassed to play in the St. Petersburg Bowl than to play in the Beef 'o' Brady Bowl.

Unless we finish 3-0 or 0-3, it's Gator Bowl.

Bama/LSU/aTm/UGA/UF/USC take BCSNCG/Sugar/Cap1/Outback/Cotton/Peach in some order.

We go Gaytah with 8 or 9 wins.

ole miss/vandy/UT/missou all should sneak into bowl eligibility with 6 wins, filling out the Music City/Liberty/BBVA/Independence.

I'm guessing you mean 3-0/0-3, but I still wonder if there wouldn't be some behind-the-scenes work to send us to somewhere we haven't been lately. I'm sure the folks in Jacksonville were happy with our last turnout down there, but it helps keep the excitement (read: attendance) up if you get some variety in scenery.

*Raises hand*

I was okay with the CFA Peach Bowl and what have you, but totally dropping the traditional name sucks.

If we beat LSU somehow, and then won our last 2, we'd be 10-2, while LSU and Texas A&M both had 3 losses. That might get us the Cotton. Or we might still end up in the Gator anyway.

I think we win at least 1 out of the remaining 3. Hopefully we can win 2 of the 3 (Ark and OM). I think that we would end up in Gator Bowl or maybe the Peach. I had a blast in Jacksonville last time and would love to go back to that venue and night life. Peach does have a little more prestige to it though and I know there are plenty of things to do in Atlanta. So it looks like our ceiling would be the Cotton. If we go 0 - 3 then we get into a lower bowl. I am good with peach, gator, or music city. Hopefully we wont fall lower than that. It would suck to get stuck with liberty, bbva, or independence. Gator would be my choice and also my bowl prediction.
