Just Curious about FG kicking

Why do we as State fans believe we are shaky on FG's? Our kicker is 6 of 7. If there is a lack of confidence it is way late in the year to try and build some. My guess is that we will need him and now he doesn't have the experience that should have been gotten against the non-con opponents.

1) Residual fear from last year and early this year.
2) I don't think many of his kicks have been from very far out--thus the weird Cooke substitution.

He's 6 of 7, but he only has 1 longer than 28 yards and he's missed 2 extra points and looked pretty bad on a couple of others. But he does seem to be kicking the ball a lot better the last couple of games. As for building confidence, about the only thing we could have done differently would have been to let him try the 42-yarder that Cook missed a couple of weeks ago. At the time, I was all for letting Cook try it, but in retrospect, we probably should have given that one to Sobiesk.

I agree patdog, it appears the problem has been corrected though. XP are straight now and FG's look straight. All this came after Dak started holding for place kicks. I just hope his mind is strong enough when we need him.

He's only missed one extra point. One was blocked, and only one of the two missed extra points against UAB was him. His missed field goal against TAMU was most likely tipped as well, so it could be argued he's perfect on field goals.

Dak's been the holder since at least the beginning of last season. But I agree, Sobiesk's kicks have looked good the last 2-3 weeks. They've all been easy kicks though.

And he also banked an EP off the goal post in the same game when he missed one.

Here's hoping that he's turned the corner as things do seem to be moving in a positive direction, but let's not act like Sobiesk has been splitting the uprights with 45 yard kicks lately. I still don't think we have much confidence at all in any of our kickers making one from outside the 20.

You totally invalidated anything you wanted to say with this statement. Dak has been holding for kicks for years, and the fact that you don't know this means you know absolutely nothing about MSU football and you just want to jump around on the message board and scream "look at me, look at me".

Dak was not holding at the beginning of this season. He started doing it again at USA.

We did try out Devon Bell as holder in one game, maybe the UAB game

If it was in fact the UAB game where Bell was the holder, it was a complete failure as an experiment, and we went back to Dak holding, which he has been doing ever since. As for the kicking, Sobiesk has been solid from inside 40 yards. That 37 yard kick he made against Arkansas was HUGE, not just for the game but for his confidence. He had a pressure kick for the #1 team in the nation and he stepped up and nailed it. Just making the shorter kicks is a big improvement from last year, when we were sweating out kicks of any length. However, if it comes down to a field goal from 45 yards plus, we might be in trouble, because Sobiesk doesn't really have the leg for long kicks and Cooke looked terrible on his one attempt. Let's hope if it comes down to a field goal, it is a shorter one.

Irellevant, the argument was that the field goal issues of the past were solved by Dak becoming the holder. The shittastic kicking last year was all done with Dak holding. A one game experiment does not change the fact that Dak has been the holder for years.

No doubt we are in far better shape now than we were. We have a guy who is consistently making the 'gimmes' and that is a positive step forward from where we were last season. The concern I still have, that I think is shared by other state fans, is the 40-45 yard range. To date we have only attempted 3 from this range and looked just awful on every one one of them. Our HC also does not instill me with confidence on our chances from this range because he has essentially given up attempting them. If indeed if we are not competent from this range then I think that means we are, while improved, still shaky in that dept.

The three attempts from longer than 40 yards this season are by three different kickers. Westin Graves tried a 41-yarder against USM and pulled it left after a bad snap. Sobiesk's attempt at a 40-yarder against Texas A&M looked like it was tipped at the line, and Cooke's 42-yard attempt against Kentucky almost hit the pilon in the back left corner of the end zone. However, Sobiesk's 37-yarder against Arkansas was solid and looked like it had about 10 yards to spare, so I think anything inside 45 yards is makeable for him. Anything longer than 45 yards is send Cooke out there and pray really hard or just go for it.

If we never give him another chance then we'll never know. Sure he hasn't been making long kicks but we also haven't been giving him attempts from back there either. His kicks have looked much better since week 2.

Well *** I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that I'm all over a message board saying look at me as I post very little, but being a self described *** says it all.
I wasn't at all talking about last year, only this year and Dak was not the holder at the first of the year and since he has started holding again this year kicks seem better to me as far as being straight not enough kicks to tell if he has a strong leg.

Relax. I think he was just talkin' out it.

Very often it is the kickers fault. None of the blocks were jailbreaks that were blocked very near the kicker. If you don't get enough height on your kick, it's a lot easier to block a kick even if you don't get much penetration.
