My in-laws were family friends. My FIL's mother contributed to his first album cover (I can't remember if it was artwork or a paragraph). They loved that man and his family and whenever the Clowers come up around the table, bellies start aching.

He used to bring his RV to football games and parked in the Junction along the old railroad tracks. Long before my time but they said that he held court on Friday nights. I couldn’t imagine how fun that would have been.

One thing that made Mr Clower so different was that while his stories made (and still do) me laugh out loud, they are suitable for the whole family . It was always interesting to hear his "takes" on the other entertainers he met . His favorite was Lorretta Lynn . He told us one time she was so country she made him look like he was from the city .

Flying back from Dallas to Jackson in the late 80ies As I'm boarding and taking my seat, Jerry had window seat in front me. Made small talk and acknowledge him with respect. Then a very beautiful older lady boards and takes aisle seat next to him. She had sorta low cut blouse on and was well endowed.
She sees she sitting next to Jerry and begins to bend over from every angle to give him a nice view, ( me too). A few seconds later, he gets up goes to bathroom and comes to seat in empty seat next me. Hes says Mercy me, i had to get way from the Devil.

We sat right behind him at the sec basketball tournament in Birmingham. I think it was 1979, the year the tournament was restarted.

He kept up a steady stream of hilarity, and was very nice to everyone around him.

I was traveling while in the Marine Corps. I was wearing my class A service Uniform. I wasn't going to have time to change once I got to duty station, so I wore the uniform I had to wear to report in. I was waiting in the Atlanta Airport to board plane. There was two navy and one army guys waiting as well. He walked right pass them to me to shake my hand. Really nice guy. I don't know if the other three military guys knew who he was.

I personally never thought Clower was that funny but he was way before my time. My grandfather liked him. The Leadco Shuffle was commercial gold though. For southern comedians from back in the day I preferred Lewis Grizzard although he was really a generation before me too.
I loved reading Lewis Grizzard’s articles in high school.

Here's a good podcast from last year about him. Interview with his friend and neighbor...

If you're from Mississippi, you should now a little bit about Jerry. His comedy kinda grows on you as you get into the rhythm of his storytelling.

Just a jovial fertilizer salesman until he was "discovered" at 45. My grandfather knew him well in his pre-fame days, and said he never changed. Donated blood for him when he was sick.

Us oldsters remember clearly the calls of "Knock it out John" during Cohen's playing days.

Jerry Clower was unmatched. We caught a glimpse of him at a game in the late 90s/early 2000s. I think we were playing Florida that day.
