this, of course, came after the vandy players were talking smack about our juco guys before "the biggest game in vandy history" or whatever. they were like 4-0. we beat them like a drum that day.

Fred Smoot is a player that if he played for any other team, I would have absolutely hated him.

<span class="entry">"I'm a natural athlete, but I'm also a worker. You put two and two together and you got a great athlete. Actually a lot of people thought I was going to play basketball. I was real good at basketball. I got a lot of game - I can take it to the rack, I can shoot the jumper and I play a lot of good defense, evidently. I'm one of those guys, I'm versatile like that. Just put me somewhere. I probably could play soccer if I ever wanted to play it, but I never tried. Could be a shortstop; I don't know, never tried."</span>

They'll want to hear something special since most of them are old enough to be my daddy. _ Before playing BYU

"He broke out all right. What, with five catches for 7 yards? It must have been a rash he broke out with." -Smoot on Auburn receiver Rodney Daniels' pre-game claim he would have a breakout game against Smoot.

He was interviewed on local TV here in Tupelo and said he was going to have a Coke before the game--a jab at the LDS prohibition on caffiene. These days he would have to issue a public apology for something like that.

After the great come from behind win at Auburn.

He also had a "I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night" quote - I think it was related to playing on artificial turf. I can't remember exactly what he said though.

"that was some long grass. i ain't no grass expert, but i did stay at a holiday inn express last night."

DS, you're exactly right. i would have absolutely HATED smoot if he played somewhere else, especially alabama or um. but since he played for us (and backed up his talk), he's one of my all-time favorites.

That was the t-shirt the Bears had made up after drafting Walt Harris. Smoot stole that one.

<div class="bodypad"> Experts were certain the Bears would go on the defensive in the '96 draft and they did indeed, but not without first going on the offensive. The Bears traded their third and sixth-round picks to the Rams and moved from the 18th to 13th position to take Mississippi State corner Walt Harris in the first round. The Bears had been burned plenty on third-and-long the previous season, so corner was a logical choice. Soon Harris would be peddling shirts that stated "2/3 of the Earth is covered by water. The rest is covered by Walt Harris." Right. </div>

I've always said that I had no problem with any trash talker as long as they backed it up, and he did. Now, if you play on a team I don't like, I may still hate you, but you can still talk trash. He's actually settled down a little bit since his younger days, I think

I liked Smoot. I like players that talk big and then back it up. But I'll admit I was glad when he graduated.

Smooth was clever/creative and backed it up. No tired guaranteed wins and ****. It seemed like every week he had something new.

I believe it was at the combine, reporters asked him why he couldn't bench press 225 lbs very many times. His response was, "They gon pay me to cover 'em, not pick 'em up!" Classic.</p>
