The way we are talking about Cam Newton has me thinking, "I've seen this story before.".
A highly recruited quarterback who found himself number 3 on the depth chart at a big time national SEC program, transfers from that school amid some legal troubles, goes to JuCo, and is then recruited again. Fan bases are sure that he can come in and start from day one.
The guy I am talking about, of course, in Brent Schaeffer. He, like Cam Newton, only had 2 to play 2. He couldn't acclimate fast enough and wasn't remotely effective until the last couple games he played at Mississippi.
Now I'm not saying I don't want Cam Newton (you never turn down 6'6" quarterbacks with cannon arms and wheels) but I don't feel comfortable assuming he's gonna come in and be a program changer. That didn't work out too well at our rival school.
Just some food for thought.

Not saying he will come in and start, but I think him being in Mullen's system for a couple of years is a big plus. I would like to have him

Look at the LSU game and the MSU game his senior year. We put in a bastardized, simplified version of a spread option without a ton of practice in the sets, and our offense ran up near 500 yards on LSU's national title winning defense and then looked pretty good against MSU as well until Werner got mad about it and put us back in the I-formation offense.

Schaeffer would've been fine if he'd have been used like Pat White. In fact, he'd probably have been a stud QB. Instead, he got the square peg, round hole treatment.

It actually hurt me to watch our offense in those last two games, because all it did was show just how much we wasted Schaeffer's talents over his 2 years. The only time we got to see him used properly was for 1 and a half games when we were already 0-6 in SEC play and playing out games that were meaningless to us.

However, if there is any QB out there, HS or JUCO, that can step foot on MSU's campus and potentially make a significant immediate impact, it's Cam Newton without a doubt.

I don't have any big worries about him acclimating should he commit. We have a unique situation in that our current head coach coached him hands on at his original SEC school. Plus, he would be here in the Spring. I think he would have more than enough time to get ready by game #1.

I don't know the guy personally nor have read anything regarding his attitude after the infamous laptop incident. But, my biggest concern would be him staying out of trouble.

that it would be the perfect fit for a guy like Newton.

That doesn't mean I think yall would win big with him necessarily. Just that Schaeffer's idiot coach tried to force an offense that didn't suit him. Mullen's offense fits Newton.

He played very well in his last few games at Ole Miss when they actually let his athleticism help him at QB. I am not saying he would have been an All-American but with better coaching, he would have been a lot better than what he was.

Newton has been in the system before under our now head coach. He will also be here in December. He is also the size you look for in a SEC QB.

Brent was around 5'10" quick and was in the wrong system for his talents. He also got there like 45 min before gametime. Yes that was an exaggeration but I remember him missing most of August practice due to passing his Juco classes.

So other than both being QBs from SEC schools that transfered to Juco, they have nothing in common.

Could there be any possible way he could be worse than what we have.I mean lets be honest the bar is set pretty low as far as qb's are concerned. As long as we don't start hyping him up when he gets on campus as the secong coming of Tebow,we should be ok.This is all just hypothetical I have no idea where the kid is going to commit.

was that he didn't show up on campus until about a week before the first game. Even if you'd been running the "right" system for him, it would have been hard for him to be effective that year. And that sure as hell isn't Fat Phil's or the Ogre's fault.
