I haven't seen it officially anywhere. Doesn't sound like good news but lets face it, it will require a miracle by Mullen at this point.

I just don't understand this. It makes no sense and no matter how a cub tries to twist and distort it, it still cant make sense.

I don't think we will ever know exactly what happened or whether it really matters. Certainly the door was opened by losing Diaz and Hud. To their credit the Reb's have taken advanatage of that situation and have exploited the hell out of it. I doubt it boiled down to money as I am sure we would have been willing to play that game as well. I think he has had his mind changed and the Reb's have worked their *** off to get he and Whitehead and it looks like it is going to pay off for them. It is certainly a nice PR win for them. As Dawgstudent said, Feb. 3rd can't get here soon enough.

I don's see why in thread after thread folks keep saying "how in the world did this happen?" Look at what Auburn did with their recruiting class last season. Why in the world would all those studs ink with Auburn coming off their dreadful season and Bama's rise? "How in the world?" It's clear what goes on. It's obvious what has happened in the past with people like Massie. Heck Nick Saban went absolutely ballistic after Massie went with the rebs. It's desperation time, and to their credit, they have folks who refuse to sit back and let their program spiral out of control. Ethical considerations aside, it's quite commendable. I'm actually jealous.

We need Jackie Wayne to get back involved with our recruiting:

Last May, Brewer publicly called Sherrill "a habitual liar" in a dispute over recruiting tactics. Brewer claimed that Sherrill had phoned a former Ole Miss quarterback who had transferred to Texas A&M, Chris Osgood, who is black, and asked him to help influence a black recruit away from Ole Miss. Sherrill claimed he simply gave some recruits Osgood's phone number. Brewer's accusation prompted a reprimand from SEC commissioner Roy Kramer and a warning that a further public outburst against Sherrill could lead to Brewer's suspension under the conference's rule against criticism of member institutions and personnel. Sherrill just sat there, issuing polite disclaimers like "I don't have any problem with Billy."

This is not Mullen's final destination and he isnt going to get in trouble before he gets a shot at his dream job. We are not matching the ante's and that is why we are losing the big battles. It's that simple

Either Mullen will change his stance down the road, or he will be gone to greener pastures and the next coach will have to make that decision

As I said in a different thread, we as a fanbase take losing much better than the Bears, we don't like it but our fanbase (the ones that really count) don't go ballistic over it like they do, especially when they are losing to us. Their hard core movers and shakers are not going to sit by quietly and let us leave them in the dust if they can in any way help it. No matter the risks (which there aren't many with Slive around) they just aren't going to do it.

play the game, he may be choosing not to at this point for the reasons you gave. From what I am told by someone that I am pretty sure knows, coaches do not get involved in the money discussions at all. In fact they do exactly what our coaches did on Newton and stand up and back away from the table if it is mentioned. The money is handled by friends of the program which you probably know. In most cases I would assume the coaches or coach understands what is happening and either gives the green light or not. Mullen may have us on red light status but that could be subject to change at some point because I am pretty sure this craps happens everywhere and is done in pretty much the same fashion.

but the Newton thing was too rich we would have just sat on the info. No use bringing up the issues to the league and NCAA and getting undue attention if you still plan to be needing to go that route on some players in the future. No, if we are doing it that way we just brush everything under the rug and move on and just say the situation wasn't worth the risk.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume each staff has 1 or 2 assistants that handle this part of the job. They stay in contact with the 'right' boosters and get it done.

I know in the 80s and early 90s under Brewer, we were really letting loose. We would have organized meetings with a bunch of boosters and many of the coaches outlining who we wanted and what they needed, prioritizing everything. That's a big part of the reason why we got in trouble. I still don't think we were that far off of the norm at the time, but we let it get a little too loose.

These days it has to be done discretely and through proper channels.

Basketball has it down to a science. You can bet your butt off that Kennedy and Stansbury both cheat like crazy. It's part of the game, but it's done through intermediaries to protect the system.

I've seen the theory about the Newton issue forcing you to hold back some this year, and I think there may be something to that. I also might buy Coach's theory that Mullen is looking to use MSU to springboard himself to a big gig and needs to play it a little cleaner to keep his reputation in tact so he can make that jump. Of course, the part about this theory that I don't buy is the 2009 and 2010 classes. In 2009, you dominated most of the in-state head to head battles. In 2010, it was close to a 50/50 on head to heads. If Mullen was playing it cleaner, and we were playing the normal game, this would've been happening for the past 3 years too.

The problem for the SEC historically is that groups of our fans/boosters that don't know about our own "system" get mad when they see another school's "system" get a player away from them, so they immediately rush to trying to turn the other program in to the NCAA. That team gets slapped by the NCAA, and then it becomes fair game to retaliate. Since the other school has a "system" too it's only a matter of time before they get busted. I do think the SEC cheats more than other leagues, but I think the main reason the SEC had the issues with the NCAA prior to the Slive reign is that we spent so much effort trying to bring our rivals down, not knowing we lived in our own glass houses. Essentially, our hate runs deeper in the SEC.

when we needed a QB more than anything- he is not going to do it for a MLB.

Whether you agree or not- if some violations were to occur, Mullen's name would be associated with it. And he doesnt want that before he gets his shot at the Penn State job. I just hope Penn State decides to go another direction.

down to money. CJ got wind of what other Mississippi recruits were rumored to be getting and he and Mama put the hand out. He was committed to us before we even got Diaz and made all those heartfelt comments about his late father and keeping your word. At the end of the day he sold out to the Scruggs wanna bees. Mississppi knows Mrs. Slive wont touch them so we take it.

Imagine if Saban lost his top four recruits to Auburn during a quiet period....

he is being straightforward with these guys and playing by the book. It might cost us in the short run, but hopefully it will pay off down the road. Nutt is already burning bridges with players he is either dropping or asking to grayshirt.
