play the game, he may be choosing not to at this point for the reasons you gave. From what I am told by someone that I am pretty sure knows, coaches do not get involved in the money discussions at all. In fact they do exactly what our coaches did on Newton and stand up and back away from the table if it is mentioned. The money is handled by friends of the program which you probably know. In most cases I would assume the coaches or coach understands what is happening and either gives the green light or not. Mullen may have us on red light status but that could be subject to change at some point because I am pretty sure this craps happens everywhere and is done in pretty much the same fashion.
I don't know for sure, but I would assume each staff has 1 or 2 assistants that handle this part of the job. They stay in contact with the 'right' boosters and get it done.
I know in the 80s and early 90s under Brewer, we were really letting loose. We would have organized meetings with a bunch of boosters and many of the coaches outlining who we wanted and what they needed, prioritizing everything. That's a big part of the reason why we got in trouble. I still don't think we were that far off of the norm at the time, but we let it get a little too loose.
These days it has to be done discretely and through proper channels.
Basketball has it down to a science. You can bet your butt off that Kennedy and Stansbury both cheat like crazy. It's part of the game, but it's done through intermediaries to protect the system.
I've seen the theory about the Newton issue forcing you to hold back some this year, and I think there may be something to that. I also might buy Coach's theory that Mullen is looking to use MSU to springboard himself to a big gig and needs to play it a little cleaner to keep his reputation in tact so he can make that jump. Of course, the part about this theory that I don't buy is the 2009 and 2010 classes. In 2009, you dominated most of the in-state head to head battles. In 2010, it was close to a 50/50 on head to heads. If Mullen was playing it cleaner, and we were playing the normal game, this would've been happening for the past 3 years too.
The problem for the SEC historically is that groups of our fans/boosters that don't know about our own "system" get mad when they see another school's "system" get a player away from them, so they immediately rush to trying to turn the other program in to the NCAA. That team gets slapped by the NCAA, and then it becomes fair game to retaliate. Since the other school has a "system" too it's only a matter of time before they get busted. I do think the SEC cheats more than other leagues, but I think the main reason the SEC had the issues with the NCAA prior to the Slive reign is that we spent so much effort trying to bring our rivals down, not knowing we lived in our own glass houses. Essentially, our hate runs deeper in the SEC.
