Byrne should have gone in lock down mode from day one if he was dealing with a guy who was another school's successful head coach. Although with that being said the leak could have definitely come from within Boise to help sabotage the process. A poster on Sparty says:

Petersen accepted the job. I'm pretty sure that is a 100% fact… a few things caused him to back out and one of them was the Internet frenzy… He was embarrassed that it got out before he had a chance to tell some people close to him, the MSU AD promised it would not be announced until Petersen had his ducks in a line. The frenzy started a mass "Jerry Lewis type" telethon of friends and people who think they know better calling Petersen and telling him to wait for a better BCS job that might come open. In the end, these things won out and he backed out of the deal. The MSU AD has a lot of respect for Petersen and will never embarrass him over the situation but if you know somebody close to the search you would know that now there are only about 4-5 people involved that know ANYTHING because the AD was pissed about how it leaked. I would guess your source (if it was on the MSU side) is in the dark now. I would also venture to say you found out through somebody at BSU and that it was probably an intentional leak on their side to start people questioning him. The BSU AD was informed that Petersen had agreed in principal to a deal.

Mississippi State is not as bad of a job as people on the West Coast believe it is and they will find a solid coach. I am pretty confident that Petersen will not be the coach now; he would be too embarrassed on how it played out.

The people that should be mad at you are State fans, not Boise fans.. you might have saved them, although they think they have the best job in the NCAA and would never believe it.
