Just how much did your bullpen cost you this year?

I know this board has a few incredible statistic hounds that know all the numbers. This should be an easy question for them. Let's say you had a bullpen that didn't relinquish a lead after the seventh inning. What would your record be right now? Just an honest question prompted by the season-long angst here concerning your bullpen.

One final question: can we trade Kellum for Ellis?

but you don't have to be big on stats to realize that the bullpen probably cost us around 10 games if not more. I'm sure some people might think it's more than that, and they might be right.

But all real MSU baseball fans that keep up with the program knew this year was going to be this way, the next 2 to 3 yrs will be much better.

would anyone who pays a little more attention to it than me like to throw a number out there?

The Friday Auburn game
The Sunday Auburn game
The Thursday LSU game
1 of the Kentucky games

These are games that we should have won if we had any bullpen at all. Give us your average MSU bullpen and depth, and we wil those 4 games. There probably are more, but those are the main ones that I can think of.

You win those and we're 29-24 and 13-15 in the SEC. We would have made up the MVSU game and been 30-24 and been a 2 or 3 seed somewhere out west.

Hitters looking at too many strikes and poor fielders kept us from being a contender, but the horrid relief pitching cost us a chance for any postseason play.

Like others have said, you build a baseball team from up the middle- catcher, pitcher, 2B, SS, CF. You give those players as much scholarship money as you can. The others you do what you gotta do.
C-Scott DeLoach simply let too many passed balls get by. Catcher has always been a weak spot for State. Even during the 1985 season, Roark McDonald was only a passable catcher. You have Ed Easley on that team, we win the national Title.
P-We have one guy to build around (Routt), but I would say they need to clean house here.
2B and SS-You need to recruit for these positions AND DON'T MOVE THEM TO FILL OTHER GAPS. 3rd basemen need range, but don't command the field. 1st base is where you put good hitters if they can't DH.
CF-I've been too lazy and apathetic to know who's out there (Hogue?). You need your fastest guy out there. DNF is a cavern. Put a 4.3-4.4 40 yard dash guy out there, the field becomes a place where doubles and triples go to die.

Let's hope there's some hotshot freshmens coming in next fall, who don't sign a pro contract, that'll lead State back to its rightful place on top of the SEC.

I'm not a big numbers guy myself, but I would say 8-10 games would be a pretty good estimate. Just imagine if we had a couple of guys like Weatherford and Moreland to come in and shut it down... We would probably be worried about seeding right now rather than all this other crap.

First, Deloach has been decent behind the plate, he's biggest problem is throwing out runners but with the staff we have he should take only half the blame at most. Second, Hogue is an outstanding centerfielder, covers lots of ground and has a good arm. Third, I agree about us lacking middle infielders, it has hurt us in a few games this year. Fourth, catchers have been a strong suit for Msu over the years, I don't understand why you think it's been a weakness, if you look at the last say 25 years Msu catchers have signed many pro contracts. As for as Roark McDonald, seems to me he was a pretty decent catcher he just couldn't hit.
If I had to say over the years Msu's weakest position (in the field) it has to be SS, we've been soft at that position over the years.

NIU- Back end of the doubleheader we had with them and North Florida. Gave up 6 runs in the 7th.
Hawaii Game 2- Tied going into the 9th and the bullpen gave up the 3 run homer to lose it.
South Carolina In the back end of the sunday doubleheader- Gave up 2 runs in the 6th of a 7 inning game.
Georgia Game 3 - Gave up 8 runs in the last 3 innings including 7 in the 8th inning.
UL Monroe- Gave up 6 runs in the 7th inning
Auburn Game 1- Gave up 6 runs in the 9th inning.
Auburn Game 3- Gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning.
Kentucky Game 1- Gave up the walk off winner in the 11th inning.
Kentucky Game 3- Gave up 10 runs in the last 3 innings.
Alabama Game 3- Gave up 14 runs in the final 3 innings.
LSU Game 1- Gave up 4 runs in the final 3 innings.

Im sure someone else will dive way more into it than I did, but I count 11 games here that were lost in the 7th inning or later. Thats pretty terrible considering we will play 54 games this year. Thats about one fifth of the games this year being lost by our bullpen.

I think that hurt us as much as anything. If he has his head on straight, he would have won at least 4-5 games for us as well, and would have filled a weekend slot, and it would have allowed Forrest Moore and Chad Crosswhite to come out of the bullpen. At the very least, Bowen would have eaten innings that are being pitched by the Jared Wesson's.

our midweek starter and 3rd weekend starter position has been pretty bad as well for the most part so while the bullpen has been the biggest problem we don't have much behind our 1 & 2 guys. Moore was doing ok until the injury.
