total silence...no bands....no noisemakers...no screaming and yelling....and no fun. Fans could scream and yell between plays. Wouldn't that be ridiculous? What difference does noise make anyway?A basketball player steps to the line to shoot free throws and fans are going nuts trying to distract him. A baseball hitter is in the same position. A basketball team is attempting to run its offense at an opposing arena and fans are so loud the other coach cannot communicate with his players. Will they stop that? No. What is the difference in noise whether it is a cowbell or 90,000 screaming fans? None. A decibel is a decibel.

my old and very heavy cowbell are over...not because I do not care but because I am not able to ring the thing anymore! Go Dogs. I just know that cowbells were tolerated as long as we were fielding poor teams but the moment we start looking good and attracting interest the complaining begins and another rule is passed. Auburn's Shug Jordan initiated the "ban" years ago and most recently the SEC is reacting to Urban Meyer after his team's visit last season.

also been on the free throw line in a hostilecoliseum with game on line and people screaming and yelling while I had two shots with 2seconds to play. I must confess I have never been on the football field with bells ringing but every team I have ever seen play in that environment always seemed to do just fine. It is all in the preparation. It takes no more concentration to hit a golf ball straight than it does to hit a baseball (did that, too). As I said, it is all in the preparation. Steve Spurrier and Mark Richt both are quoted as saying they prepare for all environments, including the cow bells. That said, the new rule is a good one in that it allows MSU to keep its tradition...at least for another year. It remains to be seen if our fans can abide by it; I certainly hope so. I have to say I truly do not get the analogy of work and a college football setting.

I have played and been in allsituations of golf, tennis, basketball and football.
Golf and tennis, it's crude and unruly to make noise,
In football it's critical to hear the QB's signals, but yes, they have learned to work with hand signals...to some extent.
With basketball it seems to matter less.
Thing about work, it's more like golf and tennis.
