I would not be surprised to see Lake Taylor and Salem in the running before season is done. Magna Vista in Division 3 also. Lake Taylor , Talent and all , teaches old school football, block and tackle. Salem will be there in the playoffs and we may see this team again . Hope so. We are not one player .

unless salem can tighten up that defense, I see a 7-3 record at best. losing to wm. byrd & Pulaski co. if they can find some answers, maybe they could win-out. they have this week off to work on it.

Yes. One at a time. The Salem offense did well enough. Even my old *** could have scored on the holes Ramsey had. But it was the defense that was a shocker.

For both participants, it will take some weeks to decide. It's not your record, it's who you play. Just FYI, because of their schedule, Spartans just lost their first week bye.

The offensive line was average at best in that game.

The OL played well enough to put up 40 points. Ramsey is a beast and made some ridiculous plays, but on some runs all he had to do was hit the hole. I am of the opinion that Amherst is a really good team. We missed some pass coverage on RBs coming out of the backfield that led to some easy TD's. The OL wasn't perfect, but some of the pass rush may be the fault of the RB's. Mag will get these things fixed and the team will move on.

They should still be Top 4 and get a bye. The schedule will give them more wins this year than last. Woodgrove will likely be the #1 seed, but Salem will still likely be Top 4 if they don't lose anymore. (easier said than done) I know Woodgrove, Amherst, Pulaski, and GW (if they are undefeated) should be fighting for Top 4 as well as some other yet undetermined team(s).

If you put "Salem football hudl" into google you will see a game recap video with some of the big plays.

Watch the video and keep in mind that these are the some of the best plays of the game from an OL perspective.

The first TD was mainly from Amherst looking in the backfield and not reading. The left tackle misses the backer (fortunately the backer had ran himself out of the play) and the pulling guard got wrong shouldered. The block from the TE was fantastic though.

The second TD was probably the most well executed of the game. It was again another outstanding block from the TE, it was Pinello this time on a double team with the RT. RG and C had a good combo block as well. The backside tackle does not do a good job at all backside and the play would have been blown up without the huge movement from the aforementioned players. The backside DT fortunately got caught in the wash.

The protection on the left side of the next play (back included) was very poor.

The run in the 3rd quarter down the left sideline was mostly just Ramsey outrunning people and completely running a defender over. Pinello does a very good job again and he pretty much always executed up front. The center and guard do not execute backside and get to the backside LB but it doesn't really matter.

The last run they show is again great at the TE spot and solid by the playside T and G, backside is ok but can still be better. Really good job by the little FB Robinson here as well.

That is a small sample but again, those were some of the most well executed plays of the game. I am comparing them to how a Salem OL usually executes so if calling them average seemed harsh that is what I am basing it off of. Some of the guys are playing at a very high level, especially at the TE position but some are really struggling.

There's a world of difference between what Byrd does and what Amherst does. Tough game as Byrd usually is(Highfill gets them up for Salem) but playing against Byrd and Amherst are two entirely different things.

If they spend the day armtackling it'll be bad but if they spend this bye week(what a great one to have) properly then Byrd will have problems. Not to mention they have to deal with Salem's own man-child TB(Ramsey put up the same #s as Basham but against a better opponent) and there's no way Beckley and the WRs have another repeat performance. Highfill was probably pissed Salem lost that game because there's no way Byrd is sneaking up on them now.

I thought it was interesting that Robinson probably saw more time at fullback than Fox did. I imagine Riley was pretty gassed, as all-out as he goes on defense. I'd like to see Robinson get a few more carries, as well as a ball or two each game thrown his way as a slot receiver.

They tried to give it to him on a couple of FB traps but they were some of the worst executed trap plays I have ever seen by a Salem team.

I'd like to see Robinson run some sweeps off a quick pitch.

See, this is the kind of thing I wish I were able to discern. Never having played the game, I don't have the technical knowledge. Like most fans, I'm watching the ball on the vast majority of plays.

In layman's terms, what made those trap plays so very poorly executed? I imagine there's more to it than guys just missing their blocks.

You need Navy to sit with you during a game. He will see stuff on the field and say to me, "did you see so and so"? When I say "huh", WHAM, right across the back of my head. After a couple of "WHAMS", you would be amazed how much clearer you see the game. Funny thing though, I always have a headache after a game!

Say it is a trap to the right. The center will block back (To his left) against the 1 technique, which is the DT in between the center and the guard. The right guard and tackle will both release on the play side linebacker and the left guard will pull and usually kick out the playside (right) defensive tackle that was originally left unblocked. Sometimes that defensive tackle will run too far up field and the guard can go on to lead through the hole. Most teams are prepared for Salem's trap since they have run it for a long time so that doesn't often happen. The fullback receives the handoff and runs inside the block of the pulling guard (or follows if he is leading).

On one of our traps, virtually everyone up front executed poorly. They didn't release well around the playside DT, the backside guard, the one pulling on the play was slow on the pull and soft on contact and the center didn't seal the backside DT properly.

I started watching football when I was 13 and also never played. I'm guilty of watching the ball as well. With teams like Amherst it can be difficult to figure out who even has the ball!

Thanks. To me, if I understand well enough, that sounds like 90% poor technique, and 10% poor grasp of the blocking scheme. Would you say that's accurate? And, do you think the resolution of that kind of poor execution would be heavy concentration on fundamentals?

When Salem played Park View - a single wing team with speed to burn - in the '99 title game, I was lost most of the time the Patriots had the ball. It got to where if I didn't see a white shirt running free downfield within four or five seconds after the snap, I figured we were okay.

I think a lot of has to do with splits being too tight up front. We have some plays where we did ok at the point of attack but didn't block LBs and the backside very well all game.

I also think sometimes the RB is so fast he beats his blockers.

Leather helmet. You guys are too funny. I did play a whole season of rec ball without thigh pads and hip pads. I was so small the belt on the hip and tail pads (not the kind you tucked in pockets attached to your pants) was too big and would not stay up. Hard to run with the strap/pads falling down to your thighs. Kind of like the pants kids wear today.

Love to chase guys with sagging pants. The pants eventually drop and down goes Frazier. Click, click its over. After two bottles of oxygen I am good to go.

By the way Clarkefan, I would have to kill a brahma bull to make a leather helmet for Wayne big head. He has a chihuahua body with a Bull Dog head. His poor legs look like Foghorn Leghorn. Boy I say boy.....

See what I have to put up with? If his wife didn't pay me $100 a month to be his friend, I would have nothing to do with him.

And he lies. No way he could recover on just two bottles of O2.

His Dinwiddie Co accent kind of sounds like Foghorn Leghorn too. My dad has a similar sounding Halifax Co accent and my x wife would affectionately call him Foghorn Leghorn.

Not you too, Mike? You have gone over to the dark side.

I'm with you Wikki. When done right, it's nearly impossible to tell who has the ball sometimes. I swear, I do not know how the defensive players do as good of a job as they do identifying the ball carrier.

We will see. I will check my umpiring schedule and see if its feasible. Fall is a busy time for travel ball.

If DP brings Jamie along the ride up there would be a hoot. At least for two of us. Poor old DP might decide to slam into a jersey wall to get us to shut up. Seeing Sherando play and meeting you and Hamspear would be great.

If we come please make a deal with the weather man. Need a cool day. If not, DP will spend half the game getting water, going to the Potty and complaing about the lines. Jamie and I have been in training all summer, so we will be fully hydrated. We tend to be on the shy side, so we will sit quietly and enjoy the game. DP, no way, he is a born politician. Talks to everybody, even to those who dont want to listen.
