Simply to get them into the Big East, so this wouldn't surprise me in the least. Good for them, as I want to play them every year and now that their a BCS opponent, it does nothing but help us.

They're just expanding for the sake of expansion. Yeah, the Memphis and Orlando markets are big. But nobody in those markets gives a **** about Memphis or UCF football and that's not going to change just because they're now playing schools like Connecticut and Syracuse. Memphis probably helps in basketball and gives you a good media market for basketball, but the Big East was already bloated in basketballwith 16 teams. They'll just be that much more bloated with 18. They'll either have to haveteams only play1 team twice per year or have teams not play each other at all. Neither of those are good options.

I could see Memphis going to the Big East IF the big east got raided for a few of their schools. But now? Weird?

the Big East lost their BCS tie-in due to the fact that the conference is terrible in football.

Was there something in the original BCS agreement that would allow a vote from other conferences to oust a BCS conference? If not, lawsuits would fly if you are trying to cut millions from an existing BCS conference despite howmediocrethey may be.<div>
</div><div>This is why I see the real power conferences simply leaving the BCS and starting a new organization at some point down the road.</div>

I live an Memphis and don't really care for watching any of their football games, but I think I'd tune in for the WVU and Pitt games plus a couple of others. Bumping up the quality of their conference opponents would make me much more likely to watch.

Anyhow, I'll believe this when I see it. There have been plenty of false alarms for Memphis fans and BCS conference since I've moved here. I hope it doesn't happen. I don't anticipate Memphis being a dominant football program any time soon, but I surely don't want another BCS team recruiting our territory. This would be very bad for us.

1) Insurance against the Big Ten raiding your teams for future expansion -- Notre Dame, Syracuse, Pittsburgh are three schools that I think might end up being invited.
2) Memphis adds basketball prestige at least, which is more than Notre Dame brings to the table.
3) UCF is in a huge market and has a lot of potential. They aren't a powerhouse now but with BCS money they could be in the future.
4) With two additional teams the Big East can apply pressure to ND to get them to join all the way or hit the bricks. I don't know that they *will* but it gives them the option. ND brings nothing to the table for basketball or other sports in my opinion. In football they'd bring a lot of prestige / credibility to the league.

but I think it actually makes sense for Big East. Memphis may not be valuable now, but I find it hard to believe if they had BCS money for 5-10 years that they couldn't turn into a valuable conference member. If they were able to win against some schools with decent reputations (and the Big East is probably the BCS conference where they could climb to the middle of the pack quickly), surely they could build a successful program that would pull in some sidewalk fans from Memphis.May not be the most lucrative fanbase, but surely they wouldn't be any worse than lots of midtier bcs schools. UCFis kind of the same thing, althoughI'm curious how lucrative the fourth(?)fiddle in a state could be, even if the state is Florida.

Louisville, UCONN, or WV in football. They'd be well served if they moved some of these games off of prime time Saturday. I'd be much more inclined to watch games like that on Thursday or Monday night. Virginia Tech made their program playing Thursday night games on ESPN 2.

I think it's a good match. I know Southern Miss were hopeful for a Big East bid, but Memphis seems like a much better fit.

Basketball it's great. I'd almost be willing to say I'd drive to Memphis to watch Memphis v UConn in BBall.</p>

who said 6 months ago Memphis was headed to the Big East.

He said.. "I hear it's a done deal. Fred Smith's money is the biggest part. Fed Ex will sponsor a football championship game and the Basketball tournament."

I think it's a good match for all parties.

that the Big East needs to get enough teams to have a championship game. That would give them TWENTY basketball schools.
