Just spoke with Croom at CVS in Starkville

He told me that Coach Mullen is a good coach and will be successful at MSU. As for his plans, he said he did not know right now. My hat does go off to him though, he really is a good guy.

I like this site because you are more likely to get, at least on balance compared to OTHER sites, evenhanded and intelligent analysis of MSU sports. No doubt. But the orgy of disparaging remarks being leveled at Croom right now is embarassing. The guy tried, the guy failed, the guy lost his job. We got a new guy. We like him right now. I hope he is successful. I hope Croom goes on to success.

THIS (and please don't let this comment feed into the rapidly expanding ego of this site) is a SIXPACK hire. Hell, it's all of our hire. But alow me to explain. Byrne is the guy who, and atleast on paper - rightly so - has been routinely fellated on this site. I agree, he appears to be sharp as a tack and flat on it. But this is YOUR guy firing the guy YOU hate, hiring a guy you OVERWHELMINGLY approve of. And **** is going to get tough for him. It will get bad before it gets better. I think he will get through it. I hope he will get through it.

But amidst all that, will the strays become the sheep?

Whoa, there. Nobody hates Croom. I think we're all sad it didn't work out for him, because honestly, I don't know a soul in maroon who wasn't pulling for him. It just became clear that he wasn't going to be the one to get it done unless he changed things, and he was ultimately a little too stubborn to. So we move on. My hat's off to Croom for the attempt though. I wish him the best, and thank him for his service.

I also find myself a little hesitant to get too excited about Mullen until I see some game footage. Because honestly, most of the stuff I'm reading from other guys on here about how they're so pumped about Mullen reminds me of how I felt 5 years ago. I bought into Croom. I ate up the coachspeak. And I hear everybody else doing it for Mullen now. I guess this is the gamble when you get a first-time head coach though. Here's hoping for the best.

Hate was too strong a word, but my God, the guy is getting practically getting blamed for sinking the Lusitania over here, after he has already been fired. I mean yeah, it wasn't happening, and it was clear it was time for a change, but the car ain't completely in the ditch. I mean, there was another thread somewhere around here saying something like we have to go dig into the juco ranks and fast.

Yeah, we will always have to rely on CAREFULLY selected juco players at specific positions for help, but you would think the memory of the Sherrill fiasco was completely wiped clean. When Croom started, we applauded him because he said he wasn't going to go for the quick fix and would build a base of players. You can argue whether he did that or not, but to deride him for failing to take advantage of Juco's and suggesting we should go out there and grab all the fat juco's we can snag is just ignoring history.

As hard as it is in the lean years, and as tempting as it may be to sign a starting juco O-line and D-line to kickstart the deal, you have to be supremely judicious about the juco signees you go for. You can easily wreck a team with too many and the wrong juco signees. A stable of redshirt freshmen o-line and d-line guys is the way to go.

I was glad to see Byrne give Croom his due in Jackson tonight. Croom deserves from recognition for what good he did do. We talk down words like "character" on sixpack, but character does matter. And we have a team full of character - coachable guys who will fight like hell and I think that's going to serve Mullen well.

I agree with you on the point about not getting back to signing too many jucos. In another post I said we should get 2 ol from juco, we need the depth there. Just look at our recruit list and what we have coming back.

He tried to run a NFL offense that relied way too heavily on the QB. He tried to basically change the emphasis to the RB because of his inability to recruit and coach up a QB. If he had changed his offense after year 2 or 3 and let someone run it without him telling them how to run it, he may have still been coach. He was attempting to bring in Borges who ran the same offense. WCO doesn't work in college unless you have All American players at positions like QB and RB. That is why Borges got fired after AU had Brown, Cadillac, and Campbell left.

In the end, Croom is suited for the NFL coaching but is a great influence on college players. If he could learn to manage the offense like he does the defense, he might be relatively successful somewhere. All that said, he still made some of the dumbest decisions I have ever seen a head coach make.

About how I did not like some of Croom's recent comments about Starkville that he made on radio shows. I stand by my disapproval.

However I do thank the man for doing what he thinks is right and installing high moral character in his players and people around him. He is a good man and I wish I could tell him that. Good luck in the future.

I do think some poeple on this board need to give it a rest. Have respect for the man and what he stood for. Question his wrongdoings by all means. But time for that is over and good people will never be forgotten.

and Threadgill about doing it the right way.

Croom at times demonstrated some pettiness.

But no one is perfect.

I think Croom's downfall was that he chose to surround himself with friends instead of qualified co-ordinators.

I don't look on Croom's five years with any modicum of thankfulness. He ran a program rife with nepotism, and he was somehow able to lie through his teeth about the "character" of his team, and it was swallowed whole by the fan base. Our football players are just like the football players at every SEC university except they don't play football near as well. He also routinely placed blame on others for his own mistakes. As the years went by, he seemed more and more petty as well as more and more in over his head. Do you realize how horrible of a coach you are if you are in over your head at MSU?

Yeah, I thought about the Croom press conference while I was watching Mullen's. The difference is, we had no reason to believe Croom was the man for the job, other than the strong desire to believe it. At least with Mullen, he's got a history of being successful in college football. I'm pumped about his hire, but cautiously optomistic also.
