Finally time for the last of the straggler fanboys to give up the ghost. If 11 years is not enough time, what is? 15? 20?
Let’s not kid ourselves, if Sandy negotiated even a bad extension, Franklin would have been shown the door long ago. Seems like a good guy (many folks are), but not getting the job done.
The buyout is the problem. Krafty is decisive and I am sure big money boosters are murmuring or chattering but he is still owed about $60 million.
I think we are at a critical juncture. It starts with this season which is not looking good. If we fail to make the playoffs or bow out with a typical Franklin flop against a good team in the first rd then I think his clock is ticking. Maybe the beginning of the end. Some would say the beginning of the end has already started but I think you need to see how this year plays out.
He has the benefit of this ridiculously bloated contract so that is buying him time. However, when you look at how we have recruited since '23 and '24 the classes are all around #15. That is not elite meaning we will not have many elite guys on the roster starting next year. Maybe that is okay because the elite guys this year are not really bringing it. My overall point is we won't be as talented as this year for the next three years. Therefore I think we need to make a deep playoff run at least once if not twice in the next 4 years as in the semis or better otherwise he could be gone. But I think he has 4 years if not more (5 possibly 6?) because of the contract.
Back to this year. If we continue to have this fail on offense I think Franklin cleans house (again) with the offensive coaches. I can see AK, Hagans and O'Brien all gone. Maybe he doesn't do all of that but at least Hagans and O'Brien. Although I don't know how AK keeps his job given Franklin's propensity to can OCs. Plus he would need to make a "big" move to show Krafty he is doing something.
Then what do we do? Franklin is not going to change. We have Grunk for next year. Perhaps we get a new OC and he makes the assessment that Grunk is not the right fit and we go get a portal QB. I don't think that happens. At this point we are in this bad cycle of lousy offense so fire OC after 2 years. Bring in shiny new object but just rinse and repeat same old same old all the while continue to lose every big game. Eventually Franklin will be shown the door but we need to suffer first until his contract buyout gets smaller.
