Just to add to the Freshman numbers talk...

Because if you give coaches an inch, they will take a mile. The seedy underbelly many talk of on here about high school football should be hint enough. Starting varsity QB not playing well in the first quarter? No problem, take him out for injury and put in the backup who just played 4 quarters in the JV game.

I understand how things can grow and the system manipulated however each incident can be reviewed right?

How would that be policed? Logistics would be a definite issue here. Another example: We have a great RB who is always sluggish in the 1st quarter but turns it on in the 2nd. Maybe we play him in the last quarter of the JV game to get the engine revving. See how slippery the slope can be?

That would be fine it today's world as they get 6 quarters now. The only issue is an injury in the first half making it 7 plus quarters. The way it's policed now is someone blows the whistle IF they are paying attention to the kids in the JV game.

But that's not the point of JV football. JV is to give kids a chance to actually play in a game. It's also the reason JV games are ALWAYS played after the Varsity game. Give kids a chance to see the field who don't get the opportunity in the Varsity game.

MCHS,

That is certainly one aspect of the JV game. The JV game is also widely used outside of Illinois to develop younger players for varsity roles at varsity speed. As JV develops in Illinois I think you will learn to appreciate the level, unfortunately in Illinois it tends to carry a conetation that the players are as you described just "kids that won't see the varsity field"

JV is glorified Sophomore football. Very few teams have the kind of depth needed not to play a kid significantly better than a sophomore on Friday nights.

Naz plays sophomore football again correct?

MC140,

Honestly not sure what they are doing this season as we have moved. Last year a big portion of the Sophomore/JV team was Freshmen and many of the Sophs that played in the early game also played upwards of 4 quarters in the Varsity contest. Freshmen also played in the JV & varsity game and against some pretty good teams like Marist(great oppurtunity for youth development).

Again say what you will, but outside of Illinois Sophomore football is a foreign concept.

True, and I do think JV is as important, if not more, than soph's. In speaking of those who don't get to see the field in Varsity games, it is that, plus development of younger players, no question. It could also be juniors who aren't playing much because of a stud in front of them that is a senior.
